...This is about the best example on ebay just now. Not cheap if you're buying outside the states.
The one I showed is on Etsy.
If I remember correctly Woolrich did reversible tan/orange ones too.

I'd leave the shiny ones alone though. What I like about the Woolrich is that it's dull.
I've been there Jim. A shetland does the trick I find and looks best.
I quite like the layered look sometimes...
A T., a Shirt, A Shet., A Vest, A Jacket, A Coat...
Like an Ivy Onion, layer upon layer...
Jimmy Jim - that's brought back some memories. My mother had a green quilted Husky jacket way back in the 70s/80s. I am not sure if she got it before they became sloaney, or in spite of the fact. Either way, she was anything but a sloane.
I hate them and will never wear one.
That's not really a positive addition to this thread is it?
Ha.
Jim's post about the Husky is quite misleading, as are some of the comments regarding this style of jacket throughout the topic. The Husky was a quilted coat produced in England from the mid-1960s. It was not down filled. It had a thin layer of cotton wadding under a nylon shell and had a corduroy shirt-type collar.
Crucially it had long sleeves. It was originally an equestrian item in conception.
The brand was popular among landed types over here and then became a cornerstone of 'Le Style Anglais' among French and Italian people. John Rushton used to sell them in his shop in Brewer Street. In the last ten years the brand has been bought by an Italian firm and I can't recall seeing a proper one in the UK for some time. Barbour do a version but it lacks many of the nuances of the original Husky.
The down vest is something entirely different and I would offer to those intent on wearing one under a coat that they are buying their coats too big.
The Woolrich one posted by 1966 is archetypal.
The shell should be matte in appearance (a cotton blend) and it should be filled with goose down. It should have a mandarin collar, a tail and press-stud fastening. Shiny nylon, zippered versions just don't cut it. Some people favour the 'western' style with a leather yoke but I prefer them unadorned.
Robert DeNiro wears an Eddie Bauer in the Deer Hunter pics on the previous page. Bauer is credited with popularising this type of insulated clothing and vintage Bauer Down items are always worth seeking out in good condition.
