Bump.  I think GG dislikes it.  'Garage shirts' were a big thing a few years ago.

Re: U.S. Workwear -

It wasn't a nice jacket unless you were slightly into The Village People.  My wife tends to have an unerring eye for that sort of thing.  It certainly wasn't anything like the one you describe.  More lightweight.  I wish I could recall more detail.  It was dirt cheap, I think.

Mine was some shade of blue (not navy) with some kind of white trimming (as I recall).

It's somebody literate pretending to be illiterate.  To some on here, that comes naturally.  But not to this one.

Re: U.S. Workwear -

Viz went downhill in 1985, after they were taken over by Nuckertuck. I've got a few NOS body warmers from the 60s (at least they have the old misprinted Voz-label from 1959 which they used until all 100k wrong labels were consumed). I bought them for a silly amount before the whole Viz hype went off after the first season of the "Home Improvement" series. They don't fit me and smell after the tarmac they laid in, but what a bargain.

Re: U.S. Workwear -

I bumped this partly to try and convince myself work wear is something I want to spend money on, partly because it contains some of the finest old posters doing what they did best, partly because that bullshit phrase 'curated' was cropping up even then.
Pure enjoyment but even the fact that well-known horny handed son of toil JFM wore the stuff it would not convince me to part with fifty quid for some wrecked USA-made Carhartt on Ebay.

Re: U.S. Workwear -

Woolrich gets a mention as a slightly marginal item.  Variable stuff, isn't it?  The shirt I bought recently has scarcely been off my back, but other items of theirs look, well, a little bogus.  I had some quarter zip thing years ago I rather wish I'd hung onto as it was proof against chilly weather.

I can't get over all those pictures of geezers on Facebook wearing bow ties and button down shirts, mooching around their apartments

Re: U.S. Workwear -

I agree with RobbieB. Wearing a bow tie or blazer on your own around the house just seems bizarre to me. But that and going overboard on ‘workwear’ strike me as two sides of the same coin.

Strange thing about workwear is there’s actually very few places in the real world you can wear it. I occasionally find myself working on site. I’d be laughed off the place if I turned up in Carpenter jeans, a denim shirt and Red Wings. If I’m going out to cut the lawn it would be very contrived to nip upstairs to get changed into a Canadian logger outfit first.

I do own some, Dickies chambray shirt, a really good Carhartt duck jacket, Timberlands. I like selvedge jeans. But if I wear any I limit it to one piece only. Any more than that and I’m on a steady slope towards a waxed moustache and beard conditioner.

Re: U.S. Workwear -

When I left school I had to wear it.  I wore it for several years.  I worked for firms like ICI: high pay, shit, heavy work.  Eventually I got myself an education: college, university, teacher training.  So I left it behind.  I don't intend going back to it, not while I can wear cashmere jumpers and pincord.
