Fascinating programme BBC4 about the comic/game show host.

He was a bit like Marmite. You either liked him or hated him. I always thought he was a hoho.
However, he almost managed to pull off the trick of becoming a 'National Treasure' before he died. I will admit he knew his old movies and silent films. He also worked hard at the comedy with his joke collections. Trouble was I would always prefer to see someone else doing his material. Too slick and oleaginous. Insincerity personified.
Anyway this programme documents his wardrobe (from 47 minutes) which includes many of the worst excesses of the 70s and some very dodgy haircuts.
His tailor was on the programme

That was quite interesting. Will be even more interesting when you can watch those old comedy shows he saved.
I'm a Bob Monkhouse fan and I remember being shocked to find he was in with the Tories, but he had the patter and a slick delivery that puts the latest batch of comedians to shame. He was one of the last all round entertainers from the old school and he liked his whisky too.
You would be surprised by the celebrities who attend private fundraising events for Tory donors. Some give the impression that they are Labour or Liberal supporters but are, in fact, closet Conservatives.
