Erudite, pedantic, entertaing, but for God's sake who would be stupid enough follow his advice?
I did like his books, though specially the one on emperor Julian the apostate, whose first lines are a satire on Marcus Aurelius' memoirs. I don't think he was aiming high, I think he wrote it feeling comfortable amongst equals(!).
