Re: Olympics fatigue

Youse think its bad over there - you should try being in bloody Australia - to paraphrase Marx or was it Bob Marley - sport in Australia is the OxyContin of the masses.

We've had the build up for a year. Stories of swimmers sore calf, runners big toe, discussions as the if its ok for the sports "heros" to get drunk six months out and post on facebook. Riveting. Uplifting. Inspiring.

Photos and stories of huge 22 year old sooks who live with mum, or in the taxpayer funded NAt Institute of Sport where all their meals are cooked for them, all laundry done, etc etc  no responsibilities for anything except perhaps using a condom, - quotes of them complaining about the quality of massages - or somesuch.

There is a dedicated digital radio station to London 2012 Olympics only. TV news has it as lead item and then 3/4 of the rest of news and sport . Cultural explanation: News in Australia for the last 10 years means items about sport, with occasional other items of murder or mayhem.

Even the "quality" radio has switched over to talkback and analysis of the Olympics and events - seriously post event analysis of a 30 second swimming race is simply bizarre. It all makes the"IVY" , Talk Ivy wars on the internet look like a major PhD thesis.

Re: Olympics fatigue

^ It seems more in keeping with the image of Australia - simple, outdoors types - but they love their sport.

GB is in a different place. We invented much of it, but others do it better and we don't really care  - unless it is football.

'The Olympic family' ?

Arentcha just sick of 'em?

Re: Olympics fatigue

I have been sick of Australians and sport ever since I existed.

Its enough to make me give up the slops and go and drink weeds with shooey who has the same view of Australian sport.

Re: Olympics fatigue

I PVRd the opening ceremonies -- I didn't understand the hospital bit at all, having never heard of GOSH, and thought the "lost cellphone" bit was a bit of try-hard, multi-culti nonsense. Other than that, harmless enough entertainment until that fascist twat Rogge bored everyone to death with his address ...

Saw a bit of the swimming yesterday. The frogs look good in the pool, eh?

Re: Olympics fatigue

Behind all the hooplah and the network coverage, etc. etc. etc., there is a smorgasbord of world class athletic performances, drama, lifetime illusions, etc.
For those of you too jaded to enjoy it, great, go on doing what you were doing.
Me, I'm completely besotted and loving every minute of it. Had the endoscopic instrument large screen converted to Olympic TV but my nurse rebelled. You know, patient safety and all that. Maybe I'll call in sick.

^ Olympics has occasional moments

The 4ft 11in North Korean who lifted 3 times his own body weight.

The Chinese swimmer girl

The gymnastics always looks very graceful, but looks best if you are a young girl or a slightly built man. Big British lump did not look too good on floor exercises IMO.

The Chinese swimmer girl interests me, all the criticism is sour grapes and exposes those teams as bad losers.

Re: Olympics fatigue

What l don't understand is why these people train hard all their life just to run/swim/bike ride etc faster than anyone else. What is the point of doing such malarky??? lf l met these people l would tell them to get a real job. What's even worse is that these people get big egos over something so trivial...such small mindedness.

The Australian's have dominated the swimming for years so it is nice to see them losing. The aussie swimmers have too much ego, and it's about time they learnt to pull their head's in.

l am very anti sport but l have always liked the weightlifting, and l may even watch the gymnastics this time around and the 100 meter sprints. Those gymnists are so bleedin' skilled, but again...what's the point of it all. The government's need to close down these sporting institutes and tell them all to get real jobs.

When they start calling sportsman heros, you know the world has reached a new low in idiocy. What a crazy bunch of buggers these spectators and sportsman are.

Re: Olympics fatigue

Another thing l don't get is why sportsman choose to punish themselves by running marathons or riding bikes for hundreds of miles. CRAZY!!! Like, what the bleedin' hell is wrong with those dudes. Why run 50 mile when you can run 5 mile instead??? Or why ride for 200 miles when you can ride for 20 mile instead. Those dudes who do these crazy distances are being shafted...too far a distance, and it wears the poor buggers out. No-one should be running more than 5 miles a day, to run any further is just pure silly. Those doods who do this distance nonsense seriously need to get a life...their lives must suck so bad for them to get their thrills doing something as dumb as a marathon. Surely they must have better things to do than something like that. Suckers!

^ Because they are good at what they do and they wish to test the limits of human capabilities.

Plus they enjoy competition and like winning.

^ Was not really aware of cycling trials. Not sure what times are either.

I have seen one event so not too fussed. That said I am on annual leave this week, so I may take a notion and pitch up. I had thought about visiting Kew Gardens but the roads will be a problem now.

Re: Olympics fatigue

Both races start and finish at Hampton Court. The women's race starts at 12.30 with the men's at 2.30. Both go up the Portsmouth Road, through the market square and over Kingston bridge. The women turn left to Hampton Court. The men turn right and go through Hampton Wick, Teddington, Strawberry Hill, Teddington (again) and through Bushy Park to the finish. More details are here - http://www.london2012.com/mm/Document/Publications/General/01/25/60/87/10022CyclingTimeTrialPYOlyv16_Neutral.pdf.

Re: Olympics fatigue

The olympics starts at about 11pm in Oz and goes all through the night, so the pickings are very slim for us over here. Many of the good things start at 4am.

Re: Olympics fatigue

Does anyone have a clue to how the weight lifting works? It didn't seem to make much sense, in terms of the amount they lift and in what order.

You cannot get decent scoff at the Olympics apparently. McDonalds and Heineken - that's about it.

Nice to see Murray win the tennis gold.

Re: Olympics fatigue

Watched Lolo Jones an American athlete tonight. Apparently she is famous for talking about virginity on TV.

Lots of horsey medals for GB and a couple of fiftysomething jockeys sitting on those horses, rather big fellas for that sort of thing IMO.
