Youve got me all wrong Ali kebab .. I need a soft soled loafer to well ..loaf around I guess .. my issue more than anything else is that I dont like the connotation of the Gucci bit loafer as some would think it gauche, many more would think I'm showing off (even though I've worn shoes 3 times as expensive ,but most wouldn't realise their cost as they would with the guccis). I think they are v aesthetically pleasing .. the shiny bit lying ontop of that certain raised lip .. it's iconic for sure. Too expensive .. check. Resilience.. not great.

Oldfruit,
If you like the look of them buy them. Why do you have to care what other people think? Also I don't think they are overpriced when compared to other brands like Tods, Churches, Eddie Green, Jimmy Choo or Prada.

The people who like to wear Gucci loafers aren't really concerned with how the shoes are made up. They don't really care about the technical details of construction. They care that it is an iconic shoe that other people they admire have worn.

i dont know about that noble .. i care about construction and im considering a pair of them! buyers come in all shapes and sizes .. conceed gucci is not just bught by shoe affeciandos ala eric cook or a st crispin.. its become a mass luxury item if that makes sense .. like rolex .. false exclusivity with a uber strong brand, backed by good but by no means fantastic quality.
shooey, you are pointing me in the direction of the 1921 loafers, they are interesting but look a lot beefier that the ones i posted which have a lower sole and heel and longer shape .. why do you prefer the 1921s? by the way they are another £100 more on top ?! also shooey i watched the video where you can see the sole being glued onto the insole, before being stiched, how do you go about replacing a sole like this. any ideas?

Nobody should be resoling these shoes. They look best when new. Consider only wearing them indoors, ie. when loafing around.

probably turn out to be a pile of shiite anyway .. but i like to find out things the hard way .. shooey dont get too excited but heres a link to a vid of a cobbler ripping a pair up & resoling them .. might shed some light on construction? does it confirm your suispicions re cementing / gluing them together before blake stiching?

For a little more coin these are quite nice and only a little stiffer than a typical black/cemnet (I tried them on). It is a goodyear I believe but they must be using thinner components since it certainly isn't stiff like their prestige oxfords.

I have no experience with these and the ones I purchased long time ago looked cleaner and more elegant but have a look

The thing with blake is that cement is most often used and removing something cemented means some tearing possible unless the cement is fully deteriorated or you submerge the entire shoe in MEK for a few days ( I did this to salvage an upper I wanted to experiment with - not for the faint of heart or those even slightly turned off by strong solvents)
.
Thanks xenon .. Lobb shoes do seem softer even though they are Goodyear welted, anybody know why? Do they use softer leather soles/ thinner soles / more bendy cork mixture ?

Gucci loafers remind me of barrow-boy city traders and Alan Flusser in long shorts.
Hahahaha your right .. barrow boys do love them, I used to work in a city brokerage and these days your allowed to dress 'smart casual' so a lot of these guys wear Guccis but more than Gucci they love tods drivers?! Perhaps it's the sheer wastefulness of the tods gominos they love as you walk about for 3 days and the nubs are gone!
I was looking at dressing the man yestday and flusser dedicates a whole page to the Gucci loafer (each page is a different style ie monk, Oxford etc, Gucci gets a page equal to a style even though it's surely a subset of slipons or loafers?!) so he must have developed an early liking for them although it contradicts what he says on not wearing Italian style shoes with anglosaxon type tailoring (which he does?!) .. breaking his own bloody rules!

When you're as mad as Flusser (he even looks like Einstein on speed), you just have to wear half a suit and trackies and sneakers and generally look like a Central Perk flasher to get your point across.
Oldfruit,
Did you buy a pair?
What color?
hi kebab, i went to a dept store that carries them in london, tried on a pair .. when i walked on a wooden surface i found something quite odd about them .. quite difficult to describe but basically the shoe sole on the inside edge dramatically curves into the foot, this is fine until you tread (as you put pressure on the foot, it squashes down and the instep flattens increasing the amount of foot surface area to spread your weight across a wider area) .. there is no where for the instep to squash into so it feels like you are walking on half a shoe sole (the right side on the right foot and vice versa on the left). this was a sticking point and i didnt go through with purchase.. might go back and see if other similar models have the same issue (didnt have time before i had to be at a dinner in town) .. i suspect it will be the case as the soles all have the same shape.
the issue is that the foot is a different shape when there is weight bearing on it to the shape it is usually, to build a shoe without consideration of how the shape will be when weight bears down on it seems daft?! perhaps style trumps practical orthopedic concerns and gucci feels it looks prettier, i dont know?
