Les Minets

I only know of "les minet" in short passing....supposedly a 60s French take on "modernism".....I suppose they'd be classified as French dandies...?

Any more educated words about this brief subset of stylists?

Found this video....click on the video on righthand side "les minet"

Re: Les Minets

Great clip!

'Parlez Vous Cool' thread has a little more on Les Minets.

Judging by the clip  I'd say that they were later, post-Ivy Minets.

A very interesting scene.

Re: Les Minets

As I've mentioned yesterday we had those types in The Hague as well during the 60s who were called 'Kikkers' and were basically more trendies than Stylists really. The overall Mod-ish look with the longer hair that appeared in US garage bands too I mean ( think Shadows of Knight )....

The Motions were an exponent of the Dutch take on that sort of thing :

Re: Les Minets

Seems like as per usual the Dutch were a bit halfhearted about their subcultural stuff, compared with the big boys in the metropolis..... I have a pic of myself standing next to a blown up photo at an exhibition on youth styles though. I'd seen this pic before somewhere ( not on the net I'm afraid ) but it was taken in a clothes shop in The Hague during the 60s and if you hadn't known any better you would've sworn it was London.....

Like I say though, it was just the clothes really.....all this was documented in a very amateurish way too for instance and I've spoken to people who were there as well......there was never any serious thought about it as for any, say, bookish connections. The wider cultural picture and all that, the sartorial mix of influences.....very sloppy they were IMO. On second thought the Minets were more interesting than that, I'd read about them before, but seem to have forgotten their Stylist attitude....thanks for reminding me ;-)

Re: Les Minets

I've a feeling that there was a lot of cross-pollination between Minets & Modernists in London back in the day, but it's only a feeling...

Re: Les Minets

What exactly does "les minet" mean or reference?

Putting "minet" into a translator you get "pussycat"

Re: Les Minets

There are always little interesting details like I've seen a pic where some Kikker is wearing a BD and braces on Scheveningen beach in '62 ( ! ), they were influenced by the West Side Story film at first more than anything, there were loads of gangs in 60's The Hague as it happens with Kikker Gangs fighting the Rocker-like Bullen, both rode mopeds though ( Kikkers rode Puch, Bullen Zundapp or Kreidler )....

Basically it was never as serious as London or Paris or NY for that matter, i.e. no Jazz/ R&B or Soul connection..... just copycat stuff really..... The Hague was a bit like Liverpool though, what with hundreds of beat groups and all that.....
