Re: Ivy League watch for today...?

What I really want is a modern Speedmaster, but that's too much dough for me to lay out on a watch.

Anyone searching for a specific watch would do well to look at watchrecon.com.  Excellent search site for watches.

Re: Ivy League watch for today...?

I have a few black face and a blue face.
I don't like them as much as white face. (cue small Al Jolson joke).
I now have 6 watches after giving one away and around 12 bands - so that will be it - possibly forever.
I do need a black leather band though.

Seiko mods are a horological cult, I am all for it, my 6105 is great and keeps good time.

There's a nice looking Tudor Black Bay mod I might go for next, but I still have my eye on a CWC Diver.

How often do you have to wind it?

Re: Ivy League watch for today...?

^Everyday, but the 10's are really too small to be even functional other than a lounging at home environment (IMCO).

Being all excited about Seiko mods, I've just plunged for the Tudor Black Bay homoge - the obvious attack on this is, why would anyone half-decent spend good money on a fake watch? Well, the Black Bay itself is a homage, and the Seiko mod doesn't carry any branding or logos, so it is not at all like a fake Thailand or Bolivian Rolex Submariner. Indeed, if someone asked me, I would tell them straight it is a Seiko mod in homage of a Black Bay.

I've never stooped so low to enter the mindsight of a fake Rolex wearer or any other luxury watch brand, but if I did, Rolex, would not be top of the list!

Re: Ivy League watch for today...?

I've got an old 1965 Timex manual wind that GAINS about 3 minutes every two days.  So it's in dire need of an adjustment.

Re: Ivy League watch for today...?

As a general rule, anything outside of -15/+25 sec a day is a sign of needing a service or being utter shite. But in saying that, there's a number of independent watch makers based in the UK and USA making very nice watches with ETA calibrations with no modifications that are likely to fall foul of that. I won't mention their names, as I am a fan, at least part of the way.

Re: Ivy League watch for today...?

I could easily deal with that much margin of error, but not visible minutes of loss or gain in the matter of a few days.  I've been waffling about taking it in to my watch doc.  He charges a nonrefundable $20 just to open the watch up and determine what needs to be done.  If you proceed with the service, he puts that $20 toward the final invoice.

That's cost effective, just think about those poor blighters paying $1000 to service their Rolexes!

Re: Ivy League watch for today...?

I like that a great deal.  I may seek out a black face for my next piece.

Re: Ivy League watch for today...?

Black faces with white hands are particularly attention grabbing, CWC's are particularly strong because of this.

White or cream faces are also ideal IMCO.
