Re: The Down Vest

Americana for sure, but Ivy? Well, in the sense of the Japanese "Rugged Ivy" I guess. 1970s outdoorsy Ivy leading up to Preppy?

Re: The Down Vest

One of the central items in the OPH. Subsequently adopted by frat boys, The Sloanes, Adventure Dads, Girls Ball games Moms, and the Gap's vaguely fascistic "Everyone In Vests" campaign. The Cargo Pants of outerwear.

On the other hand theyre very warm, and leave your arms free. Ideal for the huge gaps of absolutely every human being's life when being sartorially perfect isnt (or at least shouldn't) be a major consideration unless one is pathologically insecure and/or insane.

Unless you need the 800 dollar shiny Moncler version for appearances at your upscale fisting club in paris, theyre all chinese and shoudnt cost more than about 20 dollars. in the disposable clothing category.

I think Ive seen one human being in my entire life make one "work"- one of the petite, artsy, britpop/downtempo electronica influenced, vaguely proto-hipsterish girls of the late 90s we called the "FreakyCute" demographic. She was wearing an enormous, hideous royal blue LL bean one of uncertain vintage and looked craacking.

Hahaha.  Jeff, that picture is a classic.  It's like I see a little bit of every American kid that ever came to be in that face.  It's very Ralphie Parker from A Christmas Story.  This gives me a great idea for a new thread.

And of course I have to weigh in with a resounding NO on the down vest.  Stay put with the Stay Puft.
