Re: Film Noir Buff Hamburger Talk sub-forum

well it's true that the Doodle was very proud of their butter but I don't think any other place I liked did ...

I don't like mayo on burgers that much ....

.... few places butter it up but in Wisconsin they serve butterburgers drenched in the stuff ... could put the kibosh on Milwaukee for you  ....

as far as the Yankee Doodle goes, it was one of the greatest short-order counters in the history of the USA ... seriously .....

it is sad a serious blow to New Haven that I can't send you there to check out the burgers and pigs in blankets, and to shop at a cranked-up J. Press in its historic building, or to Barrie Booters, or the Co-Op, or the Anchor Bar, or Rudy's .....

Nothing beats Bakemans in Seattle! Not hamburgers but my favorite lunch in the city.

There are a lot of great burger places in the Northwest.

Re: Film Noir Buff Hamburger Talk sub-forum

I just found out about this place through the SF Art Deco Society... I usually don't like "retro" places and this isn't entirely authentic (although the bar is an original from Mackinaw City) but it looks great; I'm looking forward to visiting next weekend:

Ha, I can believe that. Finding a parking spot in The Mission is something you never forget... and 20+ years back, you wouldn't want to venture through that 'hood on foot!

Re: Film Noir Buff Hamburger Talk sub-forum

I rarely venture near Duboce Triangle but those kind of old proletarian hash houshes (Sears Fine Food, etc) are really a dime a dozen in San Francisco. They probably make up a third of the storefronts in the Tenderloin. There's a couple only blocks from my apartment and every now and again we might drag ourselves in on a lazy Sunday, but unless we have visiting friends (if so, we wouldn't likely end up at these places) we usually forgo breakfast for brunch/lunch. I guess if I had to pick one of them, then Joe's Coffee Shop in The Richmond probably dishes out the best food, but it's really nothing special or destination-worthy and I'd much rather go for great Asian food out there. Now for no-nonsense old school Italian espresso bars, I love Caffe Trieste and Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store in North Beach. With all the fancy third wave hipster coffee shops selling $6 roasted Nicaraguan beans to bearded apple employees, these places are rare; especially in San Francisco. There's Tosca which is and always will be my favorite, but that's more of a latenight bar/restaurant. Buena Vista Cafe too; but I always order Irish Coffee. And I loved Iron & Steam which was only 3 blocks from my apartment, next door to the great Hi-Lo Club. They had a beautiful modded 1954 Gaggia esportazione lever machine, currently listed for 25k! Sadly they closed up shop last year. Anyway, back to old greasy spoons - St. Francis is different because it's an original Victorian-era soda fountain and the food happens to be on par with the ambiance. Even if it weren't though, it's worth visiting for the atmosphere alone. I've got no issues with It's Tops but I have no real incentive to go either. Plus I hate when restaurants and bars mount TV's behind the counter; worse still when they broadcast sports!

Re: Film Noir Buff Hamburger Talk sub-forum

but It's Tops is legit ..... more to the point: the sliders were sliding tastily when I was there in 1989 a few times!

good burgers back then ....

re hipster vibe: it ain't me babe!

never was ... because hipsters don't cross the tracks and that's how I do it ...

will be here beachside in the 305 Ollie, come through town, I'd love to take you to some of my places and knowing your research skills I am sure you'll know about them, we've mentioned some of them before ... and you'll have your own spots scoped out too

but yeah, it would be a blast to see you enjoy some of the downhome local spots, so it's on for Spring Break!

btw we saw manatees last week when we went for a cheeseburger on the Intracoastal!
