I've never considered a bow tie that much but I think the tweed ones look really good.
Hep, an old madder reddish faded paisley bowtie goes with anything and doesn't look too fussy. I always carry one in my blazer pocket on the weekends in case we end up somewhere nice. It looks passable with all shorts of shirts, even a short collar casual shirt. As a matter of fact it looks best when slightly incongruous.
I always feel that the (non-evening dress) bow tie, in this day and age, carries connotations of a particular type of rather prissy American lawyer, or perhaps one of the dwindling number of Lloyd's names one sees drooling around EC3 from time to time.
In consequence it is a look I prefer to avoid.
