If I remember correctly, career diplomats had to go though quite a tough training programme, like lawyers, so more something for the typical upper middle classes.

I'm continuing to channel a distinctively English look at present, Alan Whicker/Noel Coward jet-set on a daring-do mission to cut through the PC BS of our times with a whiff of 1947, Roger Moore in the 70s about it. Of the present bunch of politicians, I think only Chukka Umunna and Daniel Hannan has anything remotely interesting to say sartorially.

I like the picture Formby posted, except for the shirt collar outside the jacket touch.
Orvis do a lot of those casual floral/tropical shirts and some excellent chinos, pleated or flat front. It would be the place to shop for that Jungle Dad/Tin Tin in the Tropics look.

And his haircut is so NOT 1970ies. Way back then, men did care much less about their appereance. Even the use of deodorants was quite rare, and smelly armpits and the sour scent of sweat the norm.

It's kind of an odd look for inspiration, to my eyes. The collar spread over the jacket lapel, the low pants with pleats, the Miami Vice unshaven face--to me it screams lounge lizard.
