I would not consider the checks as wearable with a tie. Stripes are so much more elegant and also flattering to Middle Aged physique (lots of roasted duck and cote du rhone at this time of the year).

Tattersall checks with a country tie. Otherwise no. Plain or striped.

The first shirt's stripe would be great on a pair of pyjamas, the second shirt would be best off in the bin IMO

Knitted tie with check shirt, for almost everything up to lumberjack level.
