If people want to debate the merits or demerits of these shoes, a new thread can be created.
I bought some brown Church's brogues new years ago. Nowhere near as relaxed as longwings and therefore nowhere near as versatile. I got rid in the end and don't miss them.
^i think the weejun and similar loafers and bucks were the ivy shoe on campus in the pre-preppy-fashion period; that most brooks customers wore one of their lines of english shoes (from brooks english to peal); and the 90s/00s stuff I saw at J. Simons in covent garden was never worn on an ivy campus anywhere (maybe earlier incarnations were), which is fine (wear whatever the hell you want), but it's americana, like modern filson.
. simons covent garden shop and current shop makes no claim to be ivy purists or anything of the sort, but simply judging by his window display of the ivy shop, i think i would prefer its contents to either his current or former shop (which i have visited, unlike the earlier versions), and the shoes are where you really notice a huge difference from, say, brooks.
the loafer seems to me the real american contribution to ivy (tasseled or otherwise), and bucks; otherwise i think any of the english shoes brooks historically sold as brooks english or peal go very well with the style. their rebadged aldens were very heavy especially in shell cordovan and soles larger and clunkier.
florsheims, i think, were in every town's shoe store in america and were simply a general dress shoe not especially associated with ivy (again, that is fine; they are definitely part of the american clothing legacy more broadly, and most foreign ivy fans seem americana fans too).
in new haven, the distinction i'm drawing between general american menswear and ivy would have been the difference between the ivy shops on york st. and enson's on chapel.
