I am seriously thinking about doing the unthinkable --Nantucket Reds

For many years I have really disliked Nantucket red Chino's.

Especially as a couple of years back they sort of became on trend for gents of a certain age.

Now that's passed (I hope) and I am seriously considering getting a pair this summer.

Any suggestions guys ?

Agree with BB except I'd skip the cuffs. I wear mine in summer, near water, mostly in New England. And that's that.

Re: I am seriously thinking about doing the unthinkable --Nantucket Reds

I did buy a pair in the J Press sale a few years ago when I was in a 'have one of everything' mindset. Whilst they are good, to be honest I don't find them very wearable most of the time. It seems to me they have to be worn in the right context which is probably as BB says, in Maine. If you don't happen to be in Maine, I would say you either have to be in the middle of one of those heatwaves where everyone starts wearing crazy stuff at the weekends, or preferably on holiday in a hot place where no one knows you. The rest of the time you just draw attention to yourself and probably the wrong sort of attention.

/\  funny stuff Woof

I've never had a pair though I've always lived on the water, I see them around, they're not really my color but for those who want/need some nautical prep action they fit the bill

I always have just worn some nice pale cotton in stone, oyster, or bone ......

but reds are far from unthinkable any way you slice it, if you like them try them out AC, who

I actually have had swim trunks in Breton red before and I liked them, they were a gift to my brother who in turn passed them on to me, actually I loved them because they were a gift and I kept them for 20+ years, only had to bin them as unsalvageable a few weeks ago

Re: I am seriously thinking about doing the unthinkable --Nantucket Reds

I have a pair of Nantucket Red shorts, but they only get worn out VERY occasionally.  Maybe to take my son to Monomoy Beach and play in the harbor or to a casual dinner at Millie’s in Madaket. Paired with light blue Vans and a beat-up, sun-faded, old OCBD, it’s Nantucket casual I guess.  I didn’t grow up going there, being a “newb†, and I definitely can’t do those trousers.   I’m too white trash!

They certainly are casualwear on-island though. I’d say if you’re comfortable wearing them wherever you are, go for it!

There's a great photo I've posted here on the forum before, that I can't put my finger on now, of Updike in a navy blazer, OCBD, reds, and black penny loafers. I think that's one good way to go for summer reds wear that doesn't get too deep into GTH - or GFY, lol - territory.

I never liked Nantucket reds either, looking at that site, which is very funny, reinforces that mindset. I now know I'll never own a pair.

At the moment I have one pair--from Bill's Khakis. I wore one to a pool party last spring. In all, I find them a garment of such finite utility I don't see myself investing in another pair. However, given how rarely I wear them and that my span of days is ever drawing shorter, the pair I have may see me through to the end.

Re: I am seriously thinking about doing the unthinkable --Nantucket Reds

/\  mh my mom always had us in cricket sweaters and the like when we were kids, no worries, people should feel free to wear whatever they want and be able to express themselves without being concerned what excessively curmudgeonly geezers think of their clothes .....

there is a big difference though between wearing something as a joke and wearing it as a weapon .....

how boring things are when people wear plain, drab things all the time and look exactly alike ....

the skill is distinguishing oneself with a bit of subtlety, judgment, taste, and connoisseurship without going over the top, some have it, some don't

admonishments not to overdo it do not conflict with the desirability of dressing with elan and joie de vivre

Re: I am seriously thinking about doing the unthinkable --Nantucket Reds

I did buy some 'reds' a few years ago in a J Press sale. They weren't my greatest purchase, but not a regret either, they get an outing about once a year. They need to be worn in a casual 'I just threw this on' style, preferably with an old blue OCBD with the sleeves rolled up and some grubby plimsoll sneakers. Certainly never as part of a blue blazer, pocket square and Gucci loafers rig.

Re: I am seriously thinking about doing the unthinkable --Nantucket Reds

You could try wearing Reds with a bolo tie and a turquoise belt buckle, Hell, I'd pay five bucks to see that.

I have one pair of Murray's that get worn about four times a year, in August. No cuffs and I got them an inch too short on purpose so the masses can admire my ankles.

I did have a pair from Lands End but they were too red.

I have a pair of orange chinos from Orvis that seemed like a good idea at the time. And I quit drinking 20 years ago so I can't blame it on that.

Great for situations where it's good to be visible, such as to let your buddies know you've fallen off the boat. smile Wander through traffic in the rain fearlessly, confident that nobody will hit you and that sailcloth dries quickly.

In some ways its a little easier if you live somewhere where they haven't gathered cultural baggage, since then you're just the guy wearing faded red trousers.
