How often do you wash or dry clean your ties?

I work in healthcare, so wearing a tie that is colonizing who-knows-what-germs can literally kill somebody who is immunocompromised. I machine-wash my ties (yes, even the silk ones- the secret is how you dry them.) I wash mine whenever visibly soiled or whenever they look funky. Anyone else? Thanks-

Take my advice- I'm not using it.

Killer ties!

To be honest I rarely if ever wash mine, unless I get something on them. If it was one of my more prized ones I would probably send it to the dry cleaners otherwise I would sponge/steam it.

Would subjecting a tie to thorough steaming meet your clinical standards? As there are microbes that can live in a nuclear reactor maybe not.

I've got so many ties that they don't really get worn enough to get dirty.

Never! I only wear knitted ties now in various types of wool, so rarely an issue.

Re: How often do you wash or dry clean your ties?

Got a few grungy ties off eBay last month and hand-washed them, first time I've ever bothered. Might do it annually to some now, but mostly I'm not bothered unless there's a visible stain. I wash things that sit next to the skin, otherwise things are only getting washed if there's an urgent need indicated by one of my five senses...

Interesting topic, thanks for the thread! smile

Very rarely wear them, although I'd only wash them if I stained them.

I'd opt for dry cleaning too, as I clearly remember ruining ties in the washing machine.

Whilst on the tie topic - how many ties do you guys own?

At a recent count I own around 60, which is completely absurd considering I hardly wear them....... But I like 'em (shakes head slowly)

On the other question, about 30 knitted ties.

Chums,

There was a cleaner in NYC that claimed (or perhaps more then claimed)
to clean ties as a speciality.  I tried it once in the late 80’s.  Wasn’t as successful
as I hoped.  I think they had a mail service.  I bet google will tell you.
Maybe the tech is better now.

I’ve rarely had an eating problem.  Thus rarely spilled.
If I’ve had a stained tie, i haven’t, since that earlier experiment,
done anything about it.  Just carried on.  Or dabbed with club soda.

I’d throw them away.  Get new ones. I always feel like I should
Buy more ties and yet wear the same half dozen or 8. I blame it
on narrow taste.
