Re: Stay safe everyone!

In the daily UK press conferences the Chief Scientific Officer Sir Patrick Vallance wears a good button down shirt and usually a knitted tie.
I know now isn't the time but the Ivy style radar doens't just stop.

Re: Stay safe everyone!

Don't panic, but if you have to panic do it in style like Steve and the others did in 1958: The Blob (trailer) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdUsyXQ8Wrs

From 10 pm tomorrow (Friday) until 4 am Tuesday there's curfew in Colombia so I've been hitting the food shops hard in preparation. My tiny freezer compartment is stuffed with fish fillets (tilapia and hake) and some mutton stew I made today, my fridge has plenty of veggies, arepas and top grade Colombian coffee and my cupboards hold various tropical fruits, cassava and other goodies including some European chocolate (it's cheaper than the local stuff and in all honesty better).

Now to practice the bongos.

Best wishes to all.

I agree. The US is a shitshow in that regard.

Re: Stay safe everyone!

From Currier and Ives country:

Item: The state legislature isn't doing much of anything. Considering the sort of things they do in normal times, this must be viewed as a silver lining. At least for a little while.

Item: Our governor, a rich guy named Ned Lamont, who prior to his election had only a failed U.S. Senate campaign on his political resume, is doing a pretty good job staying on top of this thing. Connecticut is almost completely decentralized. We don't have county government at all. What we do have are 169 municipalities, and most of the smaller ones operate on the town meeting form of government, which requires meetings. Lots of meetings. The gov's recent spate of executive orders allows towns to skip most of the process and gives first selectmen and mayors extraordinary authority to keep things running. This in turn means that what meetings do occur happen on Zoom. I reported on my first Zoom meeting last night. It was much quicker than the usual in person meeting, and I could smoke a cigar during it. This is also a silver lining.

Item: Many of our towns have a large number of summer residents, usually well-heeled and from New York City (almost always Manhattan). For the most part they arrive around Memorial Day, leave around Labor Day and pay plenty in taxes without asking for much in return from town government (ie. they don't have their children in the schools). Most year-rounders recognize this. Peace and tranquility reigns.

But in these tense times the summer people are fleeing NYC for their country estates, and the locals resent it. The weekenders in turn resent the resentment, and the whole thing plays out on social media. Social media brings out the worst in people and since the governor is throwing his weight around, I suggest he either ban social media (impossible) or give town officials the authority to set up stocks on the town Green and put the most obnoxious people in them. Of course this solution would run afoul of the guidelines about social distancing but hey -- necessity is the mother of invention.

Item: The gov has opened the inland fishing season early (supposed to open April 11). The stated reason was to avoid the usual Opening Day crowds, but I suspect the real reason was to help relieve the stir-craziness that is bubbling up from the population at large. Since I live minutes from several streams, rivers, ponds and lakes, I am all for this. Even "Ancient Aliens" loses its allure after a while, and when the most exciting part of the day is going to bed, something has to give.

Re: Stay safe everyone!

Today in the grocery store a woman walked into me and started yelling that I should keep my distance. I'm an amiable guy, but the way she behaved made me lose my temper. So I told her that if she's that afraid she'd be better off staying indoors.

Re: Stay safe everyone!

staying put but gardening like crazy, working out on the plants, yesterday was epic actually

at one point my gardening shirt was a destroyed purple uni-stripe from R & O Hawick from Andover Shop bought '83

today I'm wearing an athletic-gray paint-spattered Sherwin-Williams t-shirt by the noted Gildan company, and a pair of navy cotton zip-pocket shorts from Adi D. and a pair of old navy Chuck lows

taking a truckload of tree trimmings to the drop spot now

I made a big batch of chili  and have a lot of hot peppers, I'll only leave this place to jump into the water for a swim at my secret spot

Re: Stay safe everyone!

Love Gildan... Comfort Colors too...

Currently wearing a Hanes Beefy-T (with chest pocket, natch) from a shipbuilder in East Boothbay ME, uni stripe oxford cloth boxers from Maine, Wigam socks, and a San Francisco Seals cap from Ebbets Field (a new Albuquerque Dukes cap is on the way, it was on sale so I couldn't resist)... Just worked out, that's been my main activity other than going insane while my colleagues take 20 minutes on Zoom to discuss whether or not Colleague A did, in fact, receive an email from Colleague B...

Tuned my drums, put a "Red Or Green?" chile peppers bumper sticker on the bass drum head... Sun is out and I'm feeling good... Haven't gone farther than my driveway in days...

Re: Stay safe everyone!

I just dealt on a massive traveller's palm, drenched now, downed the iced water, driving out a load of fronds and such, then a cool shower

not at home, running out of books, this is a problem for me

Tropical Ivy indeed, a botanical moment, there are some incredible plants and trees where I'm at now

Re: Stay safe everyone!

Just curious- how many of us here work in healthcare?

I'm an RN in Los Angeles at a safety-net hospital. I'm nursing administration so I'm not officially considered "direct patient care" but my office is smack in the middle of a locked psych unit and shares a wall with a seclusion room, so I get plenty of patient contact if I want it or not. I also do drum circles/group drumming with the patients and with the staff.

Take my advice- I'm not using it.

Re: Stay safe everyone!

Friday morning:

Have you ever walked into a bank with a bandana over your face like a Wild West bankrobber?  I have.

Cotton made-in-USA bandana from North Carolina
cotton t-shirt Gildan (tags removed by me) from fave hot dog joint (made in Mexico)
navy cotton drawstring board shorts (south of the border)
black rubber/ribbon flips

today's sunglasses: round black plastic from the Cheap Sunglasses bucket

we're supposed to stay put, I've been going out to jump into a large body of water with a mask and snorkel though

we're trying hard to get something fixed on a boat, water's very clear at the moment, want to get out there

did a lot of gardening, am now scratched up enough for the week

got a little stack of mysteries as well as interesting Updike and Roth, Aldous Huxley ....

I might look into this thing called Netflix

Friday afternoon:

didn't manage to arrange the mechanic appointment
went back out for some gardening
waiting for a football to arrive, thinking of ordering a basketball and a net, the existing ball is lethargic and I find no net on the premises, but I'm on it
went back outside to do some gardening and rescued some little mangroves

confession, I had to go to the grocery store this morning, even worse, I forgot to pick up a few things, but I tried to practice safe shopping ... not 100% pleased with it though

like a tropical jungle outside but across the street the medics came in two trucks to take some people to the hospital last night but it wasn't coronavirus I just this second learned ... feeling better about that I guess

Ivy coronavirus etiquette: don't show up to play tennis at someone's house this month even if it's always been cool to use their court for years without asking permission

what's up with you?  ain't buying anything except an outboard engine repair, a basketball, a net, and some more limes

Re: Stay safe everyone!

discovered I should clean and oil some of this gardening equipment around here where I'm quarantining, that can wait until next week

going to listen to a lot of tunes tonight and grill outside and make a nice fire and have a few drinks

there is a pimentosa bay laurel tree here and I will be soon be disinfecting with homemade bootleg bay rum I will make with the fresh leaves

going to check on some mangoes this afternoon, last week I picked an amazing fresh pink-fleshed guava off the tree and sliced and deseeded it, ate it with cottage cheese .....

these have been some daily highlights

today so far was a fried egg on toast, iced strawberry agua fresca, banana, and coffee
