Ivy Dressing: When Is It Just Cosplay?

I think it can tip over into this if one isn't very careful.  No-one seems to like patch madras (e.g.) - or am I wrong?  I'm just thinking back to some of the stuff I used to wear - USA vintage like seersucker jackets.  All right if you want to look like a Dixiecrat - but in our dodgy climate?  Those funny Bean boots?  Maybe in Maine but probably not in Manchester.  As for the majority of most golfing jackets...  Not for me, not any longer.

Madras is one thing, patch Madras is probably stepping into ‘Go To Hell’ territory.

Nicely put.  I never really got close to it.  The Madras jacket I owned got me some funny looks in the local Co-Op, I don't mind admitting.  I simply got too chunky for the shirts and they got passed on to younger, slimmer chaps than myself.

While we're on the subject, viewing various online images has made me thoroughly 'Anti-Prep'.  Nothing new about people 'doing Ralphie', God knows, and I don't mean to stir up a hornet's nest with our American cousins.  A friend of my late father, who has lived in the US since 1977 (Hartford, then somewhere in Maryland) once referred to Brooks as 'preppie'.  It wasn't meant as any kind of compliment.  Why did I persist in wanting their shirts?  This would be about 1980.  The old man for once ignored this nebbish and bought me back the shirts - which proved to be too big for the skinny twenty year old I then was and had to be stored away.
My wife very kindly brought me back some Nantucket Reds from MT.  Oh no no - although I'd seen middle-aged Bretons wearing them quite nicely.  Big difference, of course, between a Breton seaside resort and my neck of the woods.

Indeed context is everything - a madras jacket passes relatively unnoticed in Soho or Marylebone but not the ideal garb for a night out in Croydon, might even get you into a scrap at the wrong time of day.

Mm, scrapping.  Wasn't Steve Marriott once beaten up for wearing white Levis?  Then there was the early problem of the pink shirt.

Ah the noble British tradition of beating shit out of someone you don't know because they're not wearing whatever the dreadful fashion of the day is. Albion how I miss you.

Latin America has been hard hit by the pandemic so the chances of getting robbed have, unfortunately, increased considerably. However I don't think the concept of beating someone up because they are wearing clothes that look weird exists anywhere here. I suspect it would be incomprehensible to anyone in fact.

I recall a few years back in England, a goth was beaten up so badly by a gang of bored morons that he or she suffered fatal injuries. Wtf?

Quite so.  I loved the Goths at school.  Never any bother.  WTF indeed.

However I associate the term naughtiness with more pleasurable activities than getting filled in. In which case: a little naughtiness, despite the cold and altitude's best efforts to kill me.
