What One Must Never Strive To Be...

A 'dandy'.  Fatal.  Leave that to Korky.  Yet I suspect some aspire to that groove judging by some of the snaps I see from time to time.  Not 'Ivy League'.  That's something different altogether.  Especially in London.  Now, where's Alex Roest to provide another of his well-done essays?

Adam Ant seemed to do ok out of dandyism. Chens not so much.

some sort of banal legitimacy

Depends what type of Dandy I think. I bought that recent photo book full of contemporary 'dandies'. Half of them are just old fruitcakes draping themselves in floral curtains and pouting to the camera. But some - Sean Crowley and Bruce Boyer spring to mind - are just very careful dressers and often look splendid. Chensvold - he looked crazed in that polo coat and a pipe. Truly as nutty as Frosty Mellor (RIP) was.

Even compared to present company, crazed is an appropriate adjective. And I don't think I've even seen the photo in question.

Incidentally I believe Mr Chens is now writing a regular magazine article about the spirituality of refusing to wear a mask.

I quite quickly shed items like that Don Richards coat, 'dandy' or not.  It was just too much like this 'cosplay' my younger daughter seems to be growing out of.  One lives and learns - otherwise, where's the sense in it all?  I actually had the brass neck to wear the thing to a funeral - and a Scottish funeral at that.  All eyes were upon me.  Glad indeed to 'pare down' into jeans and polo shirts with loafers or - more so - bucks.

Having said all that, I do quite miss a spiffy fly-fronted Italian cashmere overcoat I had around a dozen or so years back.  Best worn in Liguria, though, not the Peak District.
Another thread looming:  Clothes I have parted with I'd quite like to have back (if only I could squeeze into them).
