Farah

As with Gibson Gardens on Ralph Lauren, I would appreciate an honest opinion, especially as some forumite spoke of having a pair of their slacks (I think it was) recommended to him by John Simons.  Farah was regarded as pretty poor stuff, I think, by about 1985.  Like Haggar?  Was the stuff poly/cotton or what?

Re: Farah

I have a pair of powder/hospital blue Farah Vintage "jeans" (ie poly elastine blend pants) and I think they're great, fit and all. Quality is more than decent for a cheaper hopsack stretch cloth mix. I think the style I've got is called the "Walker" - {see below}

Maybe not for this forum though... not very ivy and don't think anyone here would be a fan. Can't really attest to quality due to the cheap fabrics, but you pay for what you get. I'm not really sold on anything else I've seen and only picked up the trousers (more of a sta-prest really) as they caught my eye, but I did like some of their casual cotton jackets. They looked like anorak style boating parkas. Wouldn't recommend any of their regular clobber to members of this forum, as you can likely do much better. But I really dig that one pair of pants a lot for the fit, despite being rather run of the mill otherwise. I get a lot of wear out of them and might pick up another pair in cherry and white too, if I ever come across them in retail.

Re: Farah

I had a pair of Farah slacks when I used to wear suedehead gear. 100% polyester and they didn't look too good. It's of course possible that Farah has made better slacks then the pair I had.

Re: Farah

I remember buying a pair of Farah slacks when I was in my 20s and trying to affect a more mature image. They were seen as mildly trendy and bridging the gap between youth fashion and traditional old mans gear. I never wore them much as they clung to your legs, especially during colder weather when as a result of wearing them your body assumed the properties of a capacitor and you discharged static every time you earthed out.

As has been said, it was all over for Farah by the mid 1980s when it was relegated to cheesy middle aged man's kit to be found in cheap department stores.

One of those brands that is currently enjoying a mini renaissance in the Mod quarter under a heritage pitch.

Generally terrible quality. Pitched to the Casuals who think they're Mods as a heritage brand, often worn alongside slazenger knitwear in pastel shades and Incontinence pants samba supers.

Re: Farah

I see the vintage stuff has been talked up by one or two on here.  Hence my original puzzlement.

I only speak of the modern stuff, which is a re-hash of the stuff they brought from the early 80's onwards.

Re: Farah

Farah were my school trousers and very tight around the penis area they were, generally worn with a Pringle jumper or tank-top along with the school shirt and tie. This was back in 1983.

Re: Farah

'Boring Bob' that I used to work with in the 1980s wore them. He was not a stylish man. I really hated that little tab on the back too.

Yes, I looked at a pair for sale on Ebay and disliked the tab.

Re: Farah

Farah golf jacket seen this lunchtime.  Looked like a G4, I suppose.  Unlined and made in Hong Kong.  I wondered about the date.
Also saw, possibly for the second time in any local charity shop (I mean in years) a USA-made shirt.  Even the most desperate capo in 'The Sopranos' would not have worn it to wash his gas-guzzler.

Re: Farah

Kept my distance due to not caring for the tab and the bland inner label. They seemed like "off", low rent (not in a good way) versions of Levi, Lee etc back then (vintage found in thrift stores 80's/90's). Did find some hopsack five pockets that were pretty good and some even better deadstock 1960's flannel feel flat fronts in recent years. Older ads present them as "Farah of Texas". Curious if they were regarded as lower tier or good quality back then, and when the plunge over the cliff occurred.

Still would regard them as miles ahead of Haggar.

Re: Farah

Haggar I never liked.  Their chinos, for instance, were pretty poor.  Their recent shirts look cheaply made.

Re: Farah

Never liked Farah. The cut, fit, material, colour of the trousers seemed all wrong to me. And the tab was also a no no. Also the people that wore them were not of my tribe. I used to buy a brand of trousers called GB (made in UK) which were much better imo.
I can relate to the 80s Casuals and the clothes they wore but not these trousers.

Re: Farah

Robbie, were you aware of Farah in the late 60's/early 70's or not until later? If so, did they have the same connotations they later came to have?

It was only coming across some 65-67 examples, and some advertising from that period, that made me slightly revise my estimation of them.

Haggar: in decades of thrift, vintage store, and even online shopping, came across a grand total of two items that seemed appealing. Both forever-prest trousers. One vaguely swinging 60s, one more boom years.

Re: Farah

I wasn't aware of Farah until mid to late 70s I think. I remember a couple of older fellas who wore them thinking they were special, in a  pub I used to go to and I just thought, no not for me. Then the brand seem to disappear only to re appear again as some kind of heritage brand. The cut of the trouser didn't suit me. When they came back it seemed to re invent itself as a young man's item. I may just be prejudiced against the brand because I was very judgemental re clothes and who wore them back then.

Re: Farah

The tab made the trousers look even cheaper to me. I have a similar prejudice towards wrangler jeans

Re: Farah

The golf jacket I saw at the beginning of the week looked cheap and nasty.  A pair of their trousers I tried on some years ago were a joke.

I think Sammy must have the key to an Ivy goldmine hidden away somewhere: a real treasure trove.  Only he won't allow anyone else access.  So we poverty-stricken northern boys must do what we can.  Poundshop Crusty, eh?

Yes. If you want to be Crusty, get the clobber. Or maybe say something interesting.

Re: Farah

I picture Sammy as one of those ultra-cool faces who went whistling and sneering past a darkened 2 Russell Street window.  Around the corner, however, was a hidden doorway.  If you managed to talk your way past security you got to groove to the Frankie Knuckles sound with a lot of other like-minded types.  Meanwhile, JGGaul is jemmying the Russell Street window and beckoning those waiting breathlessly behind to join him in nirvana.  We leave behind wads of cash, naturally, smile quietly and tiptoe away in the direction of Bar Italia.  Much oohing and aahing ensues over the first and second espresso.  JS, the following morning, smiles sadly and shakes his head.  "Kenny", he says, "those little Ivy elves have been at work again..."
