Wingtips

Brogues Around The Back
Some years ago, wearing cordovan, an old Girls Ball games fan said to me, 'You're wearing American brogues'. Now, having looked recently at a few pairs of traditional English, I'm sure I know what I like. Brogues Around The Back.
What name might yours go under?

'Girls ball games'? I never said that. He was DCFC.
They were ALWAYS called wingtips in the UK. Or men of a certain vintage called them 'Royals' after the much coveted cordovan wingtip beloved of Ivy Shop customers in the late 60s. John Simons was so tired of such men asking "'ave yer gorra pair of dem old Royals in stock?" that he kept one under the counter. He'd whip it out and convince the punter that the Walkovers he was selling were practically the same silhouette. He was right, they were very similar, though the Walkover was a bit more rugged and less refined than the Royal they all pined for. They also loved their 'Smooths/Plain Caps/plain top bluchers' too of course but then that's another story. Now you've got me thinking about Mississippi Burning....
For some peculiar reason, another word we have in England for football was auto-corrected; leading to much head scratching on my part. Onward and upward (as someone once said). Tworussellstreet understands - thus feeds - my addiction for these anecdotes about the old JS days.
Royals were once discussed In Another Place along the lines of: could they be worn by anyone who attained to respectability or were they forever tainted/stigmatised by past associations? Once again, 'skinhead' was dredged up from the murky depths. I don't recall any 'sussed skinheads' from my late childhood, only horrible types in big boots and grubby sheepskin coats, all chewing gum and smoking 'numbos' (Number Six, for the non-smokers, a vile cigarette of yesteryear, much favoured by the working classes of my home town). All I can think/hope is : London must have been very different. Having said that I once sold a pair of Cheaney to some London 'geezer' on Ebay and he wasn't the type I'd like to visit Rome with...
I had no idea Solatio were still around.
I still have a pair of Walkover 'American Brogues' ( that's what we called them) that I bought from JS Covent garden shop in the 1980s. They've lasted because I only wear them a few times a year and I've looked after them.
@RobbieB, I too still have my Walkovers Black & Oxblood, bought from JS in the 80's as well. Still in great condition, polished and then back in shoe trees. Used to wear them a lot, I tend to wear Sanders Playboys or Paraboot these days.
