It looks like Gieves and Hawkes and Kent and Curwen are facing being rewound up and resold on by their Chinese owner.
(I know this is off topic but we don't have dozens of new threads at present and may be of some background interest. Admin, feel free to move it if needed)
We used to have a Gieves & Hawkes in my home town, the days before it went downhill (the town not G&H). The reason it was probably there was we are quite close to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst where all the Hoorays get trained & also city types that used to commute into Waterloo daily. I think it shut down around 25 years ago.
Kent and Curwen had a stand alone store up the road in Sunnigdale back in the early 80's. I bought a few pieces back then, their Polo shirts were very good in a nice array of colours it was also a bit different as Lacoste was becoming really popular especially with a lot of fakes floating about back then. I also bought a few repp ties. I remember wanting a cricket/tennis sweater which looked lovely but were overpriced. It was only there a few years before closing down and I thought that was it, but a while back I saw guys like Brad Wiggins wearing it with skinny jeans & white trainers.
I think they had a boost in the Chinese recent peak era, with David Beckham being ambassador for K&C. That label seemed to move its base to Singapore but has faded quite quickly. The Chinese mounting debt issue may have profound implications for high end fashion spend and vaibility of labels.
