I used to have a lovely Haggar shirt. It was a kind of dark pistachio colour; a cotton-wool mix, if memory serves me well; button-down. I see Haggar fairly frequently now - and I'm wearing a pair of their chinos (not at all satisfactory) I bought for a fiver off Ebay. A shirt I saw recently had been made in Central America; others are Chinese, like one I turned my nose up at in John's last summer. Growing curious, I began looking at images of 'vintage' Haggar, and found that it was almost as awful as the newer stuff.
There must be a story here, but I don't know it. I gather it originated as a golfer's brand, like McGregor. Or did it evolve into one? Did that shirt of mine represent former days of glory? Or was it an aberration?
I still puzzle over this.
No-one back in 2009 seemed able to provide an answer.
Their shirts still turn up every so often: usually dirt cheap.
Did Russell Street stock Haggar consistently?
Worryingly, I no longer remember owning that 'lovely' shirt. I find this is happening more and more often. I read old posts and think 'I don't remember owning that'.
IIRC they were in stock at the Russell Street shop but not in Chiltern Street.
I have a Haggar half sleeve shirt bought at Russell Street. ‘ForeverNew’ just below the brand name. Red almost gingham, made in China. No placket. Holding up well.
The funniest Haggar story is the tape of Lyndon Johnson arranging to buy new trahseez from the head of the company, who was a friend of his.

LBJ sounds like the King of the Hill cartoon character from ‘his nuts to his bung hole’.
I keep expecting him to start talking about propane next.
Having spent three and a bit years at University studying, amongst other things, US Political Science (before teaching A-Level Government And Politics: what a bore that was), I used to love LBJ stories - still do in fact.
The campaign slogan for Goldwater went, I think, 'In Your Heart You Know He's Right'.
Democratic riposte, 'In your guts you know his nuts'.
In spite of my mild pro-Republican leanings that always made me laugh.
LBJ himself was supposed to have said that being Vice-President wasn't worth a bucket of cold spit.
Didn't know he favoured Haggar, though.
