Re: L.L.Bean...

I live in these in the summer:

The slightly fitted version (meaning "less voluminous") has a patch pocket rather than a flap

These are my colder weather choice for fishing

So there are a few things here and there.

Re: L.L.Bean...

Patrick, nice to hear from you.  I swear by one of their Scottish-made wool cardigans.  I've had it about ten years and still - much darned though it is - it refuses to fall to pieces.
My late father - a fisherman - was a UK Bean devotee.

Re: L.L.Bean...

Good post, Patrick, forgot about the sunwashed canvas shirts, they do still look pretty good. My old boss used to wear them quite often.

Re: L.L.Bean...

More:

This is how I discovered I don't need to fear "slightly fitted," at least not from LL Bean. I got the "port" color.

And this in an orange plaid that's no longer available:

For sport shirts I am increasingly inclined to go with an open collar (ie. not a button-down collar). Unless there's a sweater involved. I will not have a collar flopping around outside a sweater. Makes me look like "Freddie," the dodgy weirdo who sponges off the murdered actress but is quickly cleared by Columbo.
