Re: The consistency of Ivy

One of the great things about Ivy style for me is that it endures as its own thing, sometimes closer to the prevailing trends, sometimes not.  When I found it, that was it - it's also quite flexible to different situations and times of life.

Mueller is an excellent illustration of how the ivy look conveys a youthful feel but is still entirely appopriate for an older guy. I fully endorse his taste in red small pattern ties and if I still had hair it would be styled just like his, for a man of 73 he looks great in that second picture. He's doing admirable work at present, I wonder if he checks under his car every morning?

Re: The consistency of Ivy

Interesting - I was raised to aspire to consistency, reliability, stability etc. I find, for the reasons above, Ivy does a great job of communicating these traits. My current girlfriend met me while I was wearing a Southwick tweed, and told me I seem very stable and moderate. Considering we'd only just met , I assume the jacket was doing the talking more than I was.

Anyhow, those of you who have gotten to know me, know that I enjoy flaunting the rules as much as I do following them. Still, Ivy is always there when I need to convey my better traits.

Re: The consistency of Ivy

I agree he could be up there with the other Ivy-style icons. I admire the simplicity of his approach. The only slight knock I'll give him is that he seems to wear the 2-button darted jacket exclusively these days. Although, I've read in a couple places (can't remember exactly where atm, it will come back to me) that Ivy Leaguers would drop the sack for the more modern 2 button jacket, and the repp stripes for the foulards, when they entered the workforce. Meuller is another example of that. Good on him for keeping the Ivy flame alive.

Re: The consistency of Ivy

For me this is one of the main appeals of Ivy, the fact that you can wear the same clothes all your life without worrying that they'll go out of fashion or be inappropriate for your age.

This post seems to me to be a decent example of the sense this puzzlingly maligned poster went in for.

Seconded, BB, wherever you are.

It's a good one. Even worth faffing around with the quote function for.

some sort of banal legitimacy

Re: The consistency of Ivy

Well BB can structure an argument, writes well and has original ideas, so no wonder the cretins at places like Dressed Well (ha!) mock. I recently had a peek at this revolting website and was shocked at its banality, its childishness, the absolute pointlessness of its existence. Anonymous men, alone, at a keyboard, is, as we now know all too well, a recipe for trouble, but this forum, barring the larking about of Frosty Mellor, has stayed largely balanced and focused. I think it may be something to do with its arcane design - it somehow looks and feels more gentle. I do hope the re-jigged version doesn't become as brash and ugly as the words and design of websites like 'Dressed Well'.
