I freely admit, I'm buying cheaper shirts - like Gant and Baggie - so that my Brooks Makers will get minimal wear and so hopefully last a few years longer. I've been trying to remember just how many I've binned because of the collars bursting. Now I know that I can have them turned I'm more inclined to be careful. I'd reckon about a dozen have been thrown out. Heartbreaking. My first love, even though I did not know shit from sugar in 1978. But Monty Clift wore Brooks, so...

Thanks TRS , the reason I asked is when I was looking at their Ivy oxfords they showed a more detailed size spec, I’d probably fall somewhere between the med & large, probably best to pay a visit and try, cheers

I've been purchasing Mercer shirts for a few years now.
Like most things in life I think there are pro's and con's.
On positive note their choice of fabrics is really good, you can personalise the fit, add details and they do have a sumptuous collar roll.
I think the only issue I've encountered is their length. You might be thinking this is a typo and I meant to say their width/overall voluminous fit.
Having read various reviews I knew they were baggy but you can easily remedy this by reducing the body size. I strongly recommend that when ordering you consider going for a longer shirt length. Put simply with a baggy shirt you want to keep it tucked in. My first shirts felt slightly shorter in the body.
The benefit of talking directly to David or Serena was that on subsequent orders I added this to my spec.
Yes, they're not cheap but they have stood up really well to being regularly laundered.
So based on my experience I'd file Mercer And Sons under the "You Get What You Pay For" category.

Go back to that very first “Trad?? thread on Ask Andy from 2004 and there you can find what I mentioned: Alden, Mercer, Bill’s as “the last bastion?? .
Jimmy’s words were merely a reaction against this “Trad orthodoxy?? . I do not recall him saying that they weren’t that good. It’s possible, however, that he said so. And yes, he would talk some bullshit once in a while, too.

Hank, it was one-upmanship. To a degree. But what always struck me was when he discussed shirts with Mr. Strachan.
"What's a good shirt?"
"Brooks".
I think Mr. Strachan found it a stupid question.

Brooks famously changed their shirt specs in the early 1990s, so since then it's been a valid question. Prior to that maybe it was a little redundant, although even back in the day, the likes of Sero certainly gave Brooks a run for their money.

Sero and Troy Guild. Enro and Haspel. All nice and probably - almost certainly - on Jimmy's radar. But he was, I think, always in the business of asking questions, seeking opinions, drawing conclusions. Quite right, too. But, if Mister Chensvold had claimed Brooks Makers to have been Number One Jimmy would have found something to quibble about.

His approach was very much IWTIC - ITK.
