Take It Or Leave It: The Shaggy Dog

I always thought they looked wrong, even in the Press catalogue: inauthentic, like Bill's Khakis.  I love a Shetland sweater, but these were not quite the thing.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shaggy Dog

I have some Bills Khakis cords. Great quality and a decent rise. What's the problem?

The shaggy dog has never appealed to me either. If I don't want to wear a Shetland crewneck then there's always a Shetland v neck.

Leave it for me. Had a few from the Village Gate shop that I ruined trying to wash them.

Definite leave it. They're too long for me.

The return of Patrick to 'Talk Ivy' I greet with great enthusiasm.  How's everything over there?

Speaking as someone who could perennially do with losing a stone, the Shaggy Dog just makes me look as though I could do with losing two stone.

Patrick! Good to see you  here.

I just got one after years of thinking about it. I won’t be getting another. It feels gimmicky. The fit and details seem to have been a second thought to the novelty. I’m not a stickler for authenticity, but this feels goofy.

They’re not for me. I love a shetland and don’t think they can be improved upon. I just can’t see a scenario where I’d be heading for a standard one and veer off to grab a shaggy

Deft Press marketing.  Something under the radar is always to be preferred.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shaggy Dog

Yesterday morning I got an email from J Press announcing the "warehouse sale."

A few hours later I got one saying "wait a sec., hold up, you people broke our 10-year old Dell laptop, warehouse sale's on hold."

So they must be doing something right.

Shaggy Dogs are far too expensive for what is on offer. I've been wearing Harley of Scotland shetlands for many years now and I'm happy with them.

TAKE THEM
I own a few brushed shetlands from both Press, Ralph and the Shetland Woolen Co, who I believe are Lawrence Odie.
I like them simply because they're so different from conventional knitwear.
Personally, I'm not fan of how Press show them on their website - typically quite formally under a tweed jacket.
I prefer to see brushed shetlands more casually maybe with Levi's, suede loafers and an interesting shirt.
Yes, you have to be careful they don't give you a Michelin Man appearance hence dressing them down.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shaggy Dog

I am looking for a reliable place to order shetlands from. I like to find a place and keep using it forever...Jamieson's seems the best to me...any thoughts on that (as opposed to, let's say, Howlin' or Harley)?

I've had Harley Shetlands, but I found them a bit flimsy. The best ones are sold by O'Connell, which is a bit unrealistic if you're not in the US - but they are made by Odie, as are most of the better ones. I was lucky enough to buy a full set from Leith when they were fuctioning, so they will undoubtedly out live me!

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shaggy Dog

I've often regretted not being able to wear a Shetland - or anything with a high neck - comfortably.  Even a plain old FOTL t-shirt became problematic.  I would be forever plucking at it.  Gave it up as a bad job and switched exclusively to v-necks and cardigans.

Never see any of the Leith versions crop up on eBay.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shaggy Dog

Jdemy - I mentioned on here somewhere a week or so ago I've got a couple of Jamiesons, one about 10 yrs old, the other a couple of years, the quality of the newer one is as good ,I've been happy with them, I've bought both from End Clothing who you probably know, they have a large selection and they don't usually go in the sale, but if you've bought from them before they usually put out a pre-sale offer to existing customers where they offer 20 or 25% off everything usually around the beginning of December,

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shaggy Dog

Jdemy- I have road tested quite a few shetlands and for what it’s worth here’s my take:
Harley, Normal Shetland too flimsy but cashmere wool version very good. My understanding these were offered by Polo.
Howlin is good.I bought a brushed one from Trunk buy they aren’t the heaviest
Shetland woolen company .Brushed shetlands are superb.Great weight and value. They’re Lawrence Odie.Size down.
Ebay There is a lady who specialises in knitwear from Scotland and always has good deals on Shetlands
Jamiesons are good quality and have a great range of colours. Need to get sizing right as can be a tad large
Alan Paine: Quality was good but I didn’t get on with the colour so sent back

@Jdemy The Northern Fells Clothing Co sell The Shetland Woolen Company, they are currently £120 in a variety of colours. Not sure if they're cheaper elsewhere, I'm sure somebody on here may know.

Re: Take It Or Leave It: The Shaggy Dog

Thank you. It’s hard for me to see how the shoulder is set in on the Shetland Woolen Company sweater. Does anyone know? (I’m on my phone). My thanks in advance.
