Navy With Navy

I can't quite recall which thread this cropped up on - it'll be some years ago - but my interest in navy blue - for polo shirts, knitwear and cords - has intensified to the point where I'm now teaming a cashmere v-neck with a cotton polo shirt (sometimes one of the nice long-sleeved examples).  If you haven't tried it, well, it looks pretty kicked back - as only certain colours can.  Shaun Hoolan teams a good deal of navy and other dark blues and looks excellent.

Re: Navy With Navy

Please don't get me started on navy.
I love it - probably too much.
Somebody once told me that it's considered, alongside mid grey, as then key Ivy colour. Black being considered too European.
I have always thought that the navy sports jacket in wool is the male equivalent of the little black dress. It always works, never goes out of fashion and can be worn with everything from jeans to flannels.
I think the appeal of navy for most guys is it can be quite safe or if you are more daring it pairs nicely with stronger colours and patterns as well as more navy. So pretty versatile.
I stocked up with load of navy Smedley polo shirts for the Summer months.  They go with so much including navy chinos.

Navy... mid-grey...  as you say...  charcoal...  maroon...  shades of dark green (Hunter?  Bottle?  Others?)...  All good for knitwear.  Mind you, one of our most stylish former posters, Weejun, was apparently photographed recently in yellow...
I've just been to the fish and chip shop wearing a rather beat-up navy Sebago jacket over a Brooks navy cashmere v-neck (darned, so 'Old Ivy').  No-one looks at you twice.

Black, though...  The old, Scottish-made, rather heavy-ribbed, very darned L.L.Bean cardigan I bought early in 2012 is black.  I make sure I wear it when visiting my daughter in her rural retreat as she has a crazy black labrador.
Other side of the coin: off-white.  McGeorge cashmere.

Re: Navy With Navy

The navy jacket has been mentioned. The navy crew neck sweater would be another item I would take to the Ivy desert island where it got cold enough at night to wear such things.

Re: Navy With Navy

It was certainly TRS in one of his previous incarnations who started this.  Jimbo was also a fan of navy.

Yes Woof. The navy sweater. Fuels my wife's wrath. "Haven't you already got one like that"
Cable, shetland, brushed shetland, fine merino, lambswool Uniqlo. Oh the endless possibilities.
Then you need to decide how deep the navy is. A lighter navy to match the Orslow jeans or really dark to balance the chinos.
The festive season: tartan Mercer shirt, red cords and navy cable sweater.

Re: Navy With Navy

Mr Strachan favored navy sweaters, Shetlands, Guernseys, Donegals. Usually worn with dark blue Levis or navy cords. I was once in the IS Windsor and he was wearing navy lambswool vest, white OCBD, Levis and loafers.
