I remember Marty from the 60s.  My younger daughter loves him in 'Young Frankenstein'.  His family came from the same part of the world as Mel Brooks.  A born anarchist I would have thought, into Ronnie Scotts, so a natural Ivy punter back in the day.

And he certainly had an eye for the ladies... Which one I'm not quite sure...

Re: "He Bought From John Simons" #1: Marty Feldman.

Just tracked down an original B/W publicity picture of Marty.  From circa 1970 I'd say.  The sellers, who are in Chile (is that all right now?), specialise in publicity stuff and I've had a great Mulligan JOASD from them, which I really should have framed.  They are cheap and very, very speedy.

Marty, like Zero Mostel, is a true icon for me.

The Americanization of Marty.  Describing part of his youth in a Penthouse , October 1980 interview :

"I stole books for a living for a while. There was a guy who dealt in stolen books. He would pay us a third of the published price if we’d steal them. So we would go and steal books from bookstores in London. And I found I was keeping a lot of them – I wanted to read them. I actually stole my education. I don’t know why, but I got very high on American humorists very early: Thurber, Perelman, Ring Lardner. I missed the whole English mainstream. I haven’t read any Thackeray. God knows what Jane Austen did, apart from writing movies for Laurence Oliver – I don’t know. And yet I know all about Mark Twain, I know about Frank Sullivan, and I can tell you all about Will Guthrie."

I rather regretted his Americanization.  Most of the films were rubbish.  Much funnier, more anarchic on English television.  All the same, I am grateful for the extract.

Marty was 'hip' rather than sussed.  I love him to this day.

'Damn your eyes!'

'Too late'.

^ Note the poster GTG above.  I was just thinking of all those unforgettable lines that came from Groucho's lips, often written by somebody like Perelman.  Interesting that Marty was so immersed in literary American humour.  Just as Elizabeth David saved my life on the culinary front, so did Dorothy Parker with her dry but acidulous witticisms.
'If all the girls at Yale were laid end to end, I shouldn't be at all surprised'.  (Maybe a misquotation but you'll get the general idea).
Then there was Benchley, Thurber, Thorne Smith, Peter De Vries and Philip Roth to some extent.  I must revisit some of these authors in the New Year.
Poor Marty.   Squandered his talent and was dead at forty eight.

Odd, Marty called himself a 'socialist'.  I wonder what he meant by that.  I'd go along with that old poster and peg him as something of a free spirit, a Lenny Bruce type, attracted to a limited degree (perhaps) to the prevailing counter-culture.
A 'Squire' shopper?  A 'French Look' devotee?  The older I get the more I enjoy seeing that 'Kings Road' look from circa 1968-69, with all the girls in belted coats and floppy hats and the chaps in velvet and corduroy.
