Re: The Desert Boot...

AFS, on the subject of Hal Holbrook, he was in "Magnum Force" in 1973 but no stranger to TV movies.

Apparently the Clarks Caravans are reissues of an obscure 1970s(?) model.

Thanks for this. First time in a while I have bought something mentioned on FNB.

I used to buy Roamers at less than £30 but the sole is a honeycomb with a very shallow covering so they don’t last.

Two pairs of laces with Astorflex. Colour is lighter than usual sand colour.

Re: The Desert Boot...

Yes, thanks for the tip. I just got a pair yesterday too. haven't tried the Astorflex before. Pleased with the Huttons though. I got the original 2016 run and I've just had them resoled. The uppers are still in great condition.

Re: The Desert Boot...

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that Huttons are made by Astorflex, although there are subtle differences in the shape.

Could be right there Woof, as they're both very well made. My preference is towards Hutton's, and nothing to do with loyalty towards The Weejun, I just prefer the shape.

Re: The Desert Boot...

Yes Huttons are, or certainly the first batch were, made in the Astorflex factory in Verona, under the strict direction of The Weejun. So they're unlined, and have a soft low-key vibe. I like them a lot, but find them a bit too discrete. The Clarks shape, with the high heel, is very distinctive and has something of that indefinable allure that the original penny Weejun used to have. Huttons don't have that and sometimes I feel they just look a bit bland and anonymous sitting there draping your plates. But, beautifully made, lovely suede and natural crepe. La Scarpa Buona indeed. The Weejun is a man of taste - witness his lovely Playboys recently released. And he has more stuff up his sleeve I know.

I despair of ever replacing my old Italian favourites.
