Easy to forget it's their look. Easy to focus upon the UK. Good to remember documentaries like 'Jazz On A Summer's Day' for more reasons than the divine Miss O'Day.
This occurred to me whilst sitting in the car in the pouring rain around the end of October: thinking about that shot of Milt Jackson and the others of the MJQ with Jimmy Giuffre: Madras, shorts, socks, loafers. Then, the other evening, watching the movie, watching the crowd; being inspired to think about Madras - yet again.
(Any comments BTW on the suits guys like Sonny Stitt and Chico Hamilton and the Giuffre people were wearing?).
So - the cap. Has anyone sported this look?
It was odd, but just looking at the photographs of it, the vivid photographs, it took me right back - to a time and place I never knew. Does wearing a sack suit do the same?
But it's their look. We might have taken on the 'Guaranteed To Bleed' and everything that came after it, but caps and jackets (and those oddities that were made by Halrin) seem to me - like Wash N' Wear - still completely exotic.
Notice, too, I say 'American', not 'Ivy League'. A subtle (one hopes) distinction.
Have a buckle-back madras flat cap I bought at Uniqlo about 11 years ago - worn on hot days but difficult to wear as will clash with any striped or checked shirt. Especially cannot be worn with my summer go-to, madras shorts.
I've been giving this a fair amount of thought. I'd guess something solid would be the answer: possibly a lightweight cotton: possibly not white. A periwinkle Makers might do it.
I wonder if, given its age, this might bleed. I suppose it might be worth submerging it in lukewarm water and waiting to see if there's any discolouration. I was amazed, taking it out of the box, to see just how closely it resembled a Neil Martin half-sleeve I outgrew around 2009.
Double madras’ing must be as big a sartorial faux pas as double denim’ing.
Jazz on a Summer’s Day was directed by my old college teacher. He was amazing and difficult and was the editor on one of the most amazing movies, The Miracle Worker. I defy anyone to watch through the credit sequence and not get roped in until the last, exhausting, exhilarating minute.

Double Madras, double denim - out.
Jdemy, is that Bert Stern?
No, Aram Avakian. Just checked.
