The Fisherman's Sweater

In spite of constantly evaluating what I own and wear, I've retained a mental 'bucket list' for years.  A decent shawl cardigan is on it (navy, made in England or Scotland - or Ireland, or the USA, 100 per cent wool), and one of the aforementioned - but not in a crew-neck.  With the weather turning chillier, it might well be a good investment.  Don't you think?

Yeah. I’ve always had one or two on the go. I Seem to be spending more and more time standing around in the cold. They do tend to come up (down?) quite long. And are obviously a larger fit all round. So really for around the house or under longer coats. I find they look pretty good under a peacoat. Or a parka if I’m on one of The Wife’s forced route marches over the South Downs.
Also a proper Guernsey is a sound investment. Saw a guy the other week wearing a red one with blue/white uni stripe button down. Looked a lot better then I would have imagined

Mm, I wonder who he was?  Sounds like he ought to be on 'Talk Ivy'.

Re: The Fisherman's Sweater

My god daughters husband was wearing a cream fisherman's sweater with a checked overshirt when we met last week. It looked pretty good but maybe too warm for my liking, sitting inside a heated house.

AFS - it was a strange morning. Every Saturday we take the boy to his Gym club in Farnborough. Which is pretty much the epicentre of the current JD Sports epidemic.
I saw this guy; red guernsey, uni bd, chinos and pretty good shoes. Half an hour later another dad at pick up; Barbour, turned up jeans. Blue/white polka dot Tootal style scarf. Decent shoes.
Must have broken some sort of record for that town.

Re: The Fisherman's Sweater

The chances are, they may not know what they're doing.  But putting it together like that...  I may be wrong...
We have neither heating or hot water.  Shivered under a blanket last night watching 'NYPD Blue'.  I tried following the instructions on how to top up the water level but nothing happened, dammit.
Casting my mind back, I did own a chunky M&S sweater which came from a charity shop.  That must be going back to around 2008 or 2009.  It would have had a round neck, though, so it would have disappeared on that basis.

Spendthrift-You're a cheeky monkey. I have all mod-cons in my house and the wife does let me use them (when we have guests).
AFS-you got trouble with your boiler? The bloke I met with the Fisherman's jumper was actually a H&V Engineer I'll send him round

@Spendthrift that definitely is a record, I never seen anyone remotely like that in and around Farnborough, during my visits to Decathlon & B&Q.

Re: The Fisherman's Sweater

I watched a great series on YouTube about knitting and the history of various fisherman sweaters. Try looking for  “Knit history knitting Darlene Montes De Oca?? . I think that might bring up the whole lot of videos. There’s also a company that will hand knit you a Gansey- Guernsey-in the traditional way for just under a million dollars.

Re: The Fisherman's Sweater

I see a bloke Friday morning when I was walking the dogs early close to home, didn’t see him that well but I think he was wearing a Harrington, definitely slim jeans with a turn up and decent footwear, worn in a Chiltern st sort of way and not an ageing skin, grey hair so 40+ , maybe I’ve got a kindred spirit close by,

Re: The Fisherman's Sweater

Fisherman’s sweater?

A guernsey? An Aran knit?

Or still nautical a submariners jumper.

Woolaways do reasonably-priced versions of these except the Guernsey. The sort of unsung Leicester manufacturer that probably supplied M&S when it was 90% British made and St.Michael still looked over us.

Another very warm option is a countryman sweater - a sort of woolly pulley with suede patches.

I don’t know whether they are Ivy or not - nor do I give a fuck.

Re: The Fisherman's Sweater

Every so often Ebay will throw up something that looks just the ticket.  So it was in the week before Christmas when this chunky cable-knit item appeared on my radar.  A very, very pale grey, lightly flecked.  I had been hanging my nose over an old Alan Paine, being offered in the USA.  Stone, flecked: very nice indeed.  But the price of the item, plus the postage and customs charges (and the fact the seller seemed rather sloppy) led me to what's just turned up with Hermes.  I'd guess it's hand-knitted, possibly by somebody's aunt.  It was less than half the price of the Paine - which reminded me very much of the kind of jumper I was wearing at my junior school circa 1965.
