A Really Horrible Shoe: The Baracuta Two-Tone Brogue

What on earth?  I mean, what possess them?  Do they truly have customers who yearn to look like the kids in 'Bugsy Malone'?  Or is another Swing revival in the offing?  They remind me of Oreo biscuits.  Lest it be thought I'm singling out Baracuta for unfair treatment, let it not be forgotten that Alfred Sergeant was offering something equally awful around fifteen or sixteen years ago.
Has Paul Weller been spotted sporting something like these?  Is it true that Baracuta is now in the hands of the Italians?

Weller’s worn them off and on for years.
I’ve always thought Bugsy Malone too. Which is enough to put me off. But just on a practical level, I’ve always wondered how polishing works? Surely you couldn’t help but get a terrible ‘bleeding’ effect?
Also I think no matter what else you’re wearing, they create an unbalanced look. All the attention goes to the shoes? They’re a bit ‘look at me’.
I might be wrong, but I think now Baracuta is part of a wider portfolio of names for an Italian company. Which would explain the completely out of touch pricing and out of keeping products.
There is a bit of a tradition in Italy for the boss to give areas of the business (or at least allow the name to be licensed) to feckless family members to keep them out of trouble. Everything about Baracuta smacks of that to me. Still a fan of those harringtons though

You sometimes see chaps wearing them in black and white movies: often with big baggy suits with chalk stripes and peaked lapels.  Often the character will be a shady lawyer, a DA in the pay of the mob - slicked down hair and a lopsided grin.  Not to be relied on.

Correspondent shoes.

"Florid, smug, middle-aged golf club bore in this country I'd say. Propping up the 19th hole in deepest Surrey bemoaning the perils of immigration."

Yes. Usually worn with a wide brim trilby and a tommy gun.

'Horrible Histories': Baracuta.  There for all to see online.  Just as bad - perhaps worse - than Fred Perry.  Yes, worse.
I was interested, however, to see that Viyella had once produced a 'Harrington jacket' and that someone claimed to have watched old episodes of 'Peyton Place' and could not honestly swear to having seen Ryan O'Neal in any such item.

They were probably right, try searching the internet for images of Rodney Harrington in "that jacket" and you'll struggle to find just one.
