Hitchcock Blonde

My word, I like Miss Saint in 'North By Northwest'.  Also Claude Jade in 'Topaz' and Anny Ondra in 'Blackmail'.

Re: Hitchcock Blonde

For anyone who's a fan (I know TRS is) I was watching 'North By Northwest' last evening; running a careful eye over the clothing as well as the delightful Eve Kendall character.  Was it almost one hundred per cent, pure, no-nonsense 'Madison Avenue'?  I think I saw a little 'Ivy' in some of the background sequences.  And some of those hats - made by the Stetson company?  Cary Grant is sliding around in loafers towards the end.

Re: Hitchcock Blonde

Much more Madison than Ivy I would say. There's often a little flash of Ivy in there somewhere. Not usually the most memorable, cinematic moments. Often it's that "Dont look now but those two guys over there............ " cuts to a glimpse of collar or 3/2 roll and it's gone.

In these days of Katie Price etc. 'Celebrities' making general arses of themselves for the sole purpose of further publicity. Ugg boots, tattoo addiction, fat lipped twats attempting to pose seductively over a bowl of pasta on Instagram, sportswear for watching daytime TV and generally attempting to make your life as close as possible to an episode of Eastenders. I would suggest anyone do a quick 'Google Image' of Hitchcock leading ladies.

To be even handed; In these days of Matthew Wright etc. 'Celebrities' making general arses of themselves for the sole purpose of further publicity. White socks with sliders, tattoo addiction, fat headed twats attempting to look intimidating with a can of Monster energy drink, sportswear for hanging round the edge of the playground and generally attempting to make your life as close as possible to an episode of The Jeremy Kyle show. I would suggest a quick 'Google Image of Hitchcock leading men.

Re: Hitchcock Blonde

What we appear to have lost from the world is wit, style, romance and generosity.  I intend to spend a good deal of 2022 reading the likes of Dorothy Parker, James Thurber, S.J.Perelman, Alexander Woollcott, Thorne Smith, Wodehouse, early Waugh and a good many others.  Also watching a good many movies of the 1930s and early 1940s, in which people reach for the stars, lasso the moon and rub noses with Myrna Loy.
At the moment, however, I'm working my way through a study of Abstract Expressionism: the 'other world of Ivy' (?).  Reading about this here and there in the Kelley biography of Monk set me off again.

Re: Hitchcock Blonde

Madison - not another genre to contend with, I’ve barely worked out the difference between Trad and Ivy!

Objectively, are they not all branches jutting out from the same tree?  It's 'American' dressing.  You'll see someone vaguely eyeing you, trying to work out exactly what's different.  The easiest explanation - if you find yourself in the position of wanting to do so - is, it's 'American'.  It's enough to satisfy most people because a. they don't really know what you're getting at and b. they were never really that interested in the first place.  But 'Trad', 'Prep', 'Ivy', 'Madison' - we can afford to pick and choose.

JFM, when very active on here, probably caused a good deal of pointless confusion.

Re: Hitchcock Blonde

Cary in NBNW - he wears an ecru Brooks Brothers button-down later in the film when he is 'dressed down', along with penny loafers, and pale socks - a marvellous cinematic moment. This was clearly meant to be visually signaling the Madison Avenue Ad Man Ivy Look. As does Robert Redford in Barefoot In The Park. Those long scooped out tails don't half get me going, as does Jane Fonda in a duffel coat with nothing underneath...

Re: Hitchcock Blonde

What about that house near the end?  Who might the architect/designer/engineer have been?  Neutra?  Was it his style?

TRS, as evidenced by his post above, is nothing but a filthy-minded old bugger.

Re: Hitchcock Blonde

Poor old Tippi Hedren and Kim Novak having to fend off Hitchcock.

But then few on here are bothered by Polanski or Woody Allen’s behaviour.

Re: Hitchcock Blonde

It's more a reference to a screen image than Hitchcock's sexual proclivities.
