Re: Is 'Work Wear' 'Ivy League' Or 'Americana'?

Re Carhartt. It’s best to look at it as two operations under one brand name

‘Carhartt’ is, I believe, still US, but mostly Mexico made.

Then there’s ‘Carhartt WIP’ which is (again, I think) largely a German operation. Production for WIP is mainly Tunisia but spread over Europe.

The original Carhartt still concentrates on a core range aimed towards construction type trades, and those looking for that standard of clothing. Their duck cotton is superb.

WIP is more of a streetwear brand and carries much more in the way of ‘branded tat’ (bags, keyrings etc.) Although a lot of it is quite well made and of pretty good materials. From what I’ve seen, the standard is certainly on par or better than comparable brands. Levi, Dickies etc. If you were in the market for a £200 winter jacket or parka and didn’t mind the brand you could do a lot worse than WIP.
