I'm no convert to Instagram, but TwoRussellStreet has done enough to convince me that visual stimulus is essential if 'Talk Ivy' is to survive much longer. I sense posters are growing frustrated at having items of clothing described whilst lacking the ability to upload, view or share. I've no technical aptitude myself but even I appreciate seeing images of sack jackets, loafers and button-down shirts.
I know many of you feel the same way.
It's a strange one, all the time I was lurking on TI, I would barely comment let alone post photo's on here (when you could) but IG I have no problem with. I just follow those who post similar content to myself.
I always looked in on, and enjoyed, 'The Syllabus', for its sheer variety and exuberance. One never quite knew what was coming round the corner.
Elsewhere, the visual element still plays quite a big part for me - as an example, some of the studies taken in and around Chiltern Street, that follow on from those taken years ago outside 2 Russell Street. It's always interesting to see what John Simons is wearing: green shorts, what look like trainer socks and New Balance in one photograph. No-one could ever match his looks over the years. No-one could ever pin him down. John Simons isn't 'Ivy League', he's absolutely John Simons.
(The JS Twitter page remains extraordinarily peculiar, I think).
I've never looked at IS. Or Facebook, Twitter etc. So don't know if it's possible to add links to a post? Like you would with YouTube for example.
Maybe as some kind of 'hack' a link to an IS post could be added to a post on here that could enable us to see a picture over there and carry on the conversation?
I'm fully prepared for someone to point out that I'm talking rubbish. If you subscribe to IS can you even just lurk without posting yourself?
The longer FNB remains unchanged, the more obvious it is that the owner isn't interested and hasn't been for a long while. Most likely he's wondering why someone doesn't just set up a new Talk Ivy and let this one fade away. Which is easy to say if you've had the time, money and know how to do it before.
A lot of the action on 'Talk Ivy' became linked to Facebook around, oh, a dozen or so years ago. I hated it then and hate it still. Facebook is for people like my elder daughter who, considering she has a job, a four year old and a garden the size of Trafalgar Square, still has too much time on her hands. My younger daughter - the intellectual of the family - is utterly contemptuous.
But people were seduced by it and it was as if they were simply waiting for something more advanced to come along.
Me, I'm a complete reactionary. I don't even own a mobile 'phone and have trouble working the DVD player.
I genuinely think imagery is really important given we're mainly talking about aesthetic details.
Also, some of the Ivy defining details are more easily articulated with visual evidence.
I frequently use Insta as source of inspiration and to see what's out there.
I only follow a relatively small group of posters who share similar approach to design.
The Weejun is always worthy of consideration: in the same league (more or less) as our own TRS. He was a major player on 'Talk Ivy' before I became involved and was invariably courteous and constructive in his approach.
The Weejun's content on Insta is 100%, IMO, and as Alvey has pointed out a great source of inspiration.
Please forgive the following if I have got any names wrong:
You be surprised how wide the UK ivy community is on Insta. The Weejun and Customer Number Two Please are probably the Dons in all this but as a starter for ten here's some sharp dressers worth having a look at
Jeffries Passage
Dean Swift 1967
Milton Astley
Peter Knocko
Stacey Boy06
Scjjwf
Peter Kinnaird
Ganymede57
There are many more I could mention
Stacey Boy is a former poster of ours, a very nice chap indeed who I was once in contact with.
I don't know of/about the others with the exception of Peter Kinnaird, who is a friend of TRS (CustomerNumberTwoPlease) and Peter Knock, who is certainly known to TRS.
I may have a shufti.
You can add our Alvey, ad_man67 to the list, hope you don't mind Alvey. I will also add Heavy Tweed Jacket and Glengarry Sporting Club to the mix.
