Re: Leather jackets - what is it about them?

Thanks Woof. I've learned a new word today!

Maybe the A2 would work best if one was going for some kind of New York taxi driver look? With newsboy cap of course (probably not leather though).

Brown, not black, so as to avoid any Top Gun references?

Still. I think if I was playing 'leather jacket word association' the first thing out of my mouth might be 'Hasselhoff'

Re: Leather jackets - what is it about them?

That Vanity article was interesting to read for the prices in 1987, just wish all those wonderful items they stocked back then were still available,( I'm sure Paul does as well), I was in Chiltern St on Wednesday, I tried on the jacket Paul Weller has on in the picture and although darted it was a very nice jacket, natural shoulder, 1/2 lined ( I think),and a good price at £395, but I'd already decided on the J.Press check jacket they had in the window, (it was on their FB page last week), just my size, perfect fit, not new but almost new, apparently they were selling it for a customer who had outgrown it, made in USA, TBH if they had said it was new I wouldn't have questioned it, PW wasn't in the shop but I saw him in the street 10 minutes later !

I don't mean to be constantly and consistently rude to Mr.Weller but I took a marked dislike to him in 1977 and have found no reason to alter my opinion.  Mind you, I do now think John Lydon is something of a tit as well.  I'm sorry, but I loathe Weller's posturing ponce politics and that has a knock-on effect.

Re: Leather jackets - what is it about them?

Considering 85% of UK newspapers are fanatically in favour of the Conservatives I don't see the problem with someone giving an alternative viewpoint. Quite the opposite. Weller has also been vocal about his musical influences which in the past will have helped introduce a lot of people to vintage soul and other music that for a while was hard to find.

His music has never done much for me, although I did like the Style Council at the time.

As re. his association with JS: it's the perfect partnership for both sides. Weller's fans are now old enough to be able to pay decent money for well-made clothing, and JS has enough experience and kudos to add some class to the collaboration. It's of no interest to me personally but then if JS relied on me to earn his living he would have gone bankrupt many years ago.

I thought as I was typing the above: cue Yuca.  That's what I thought: cue Yuca.  And so it came to pass.
I also detested Kenny fucking Everett for his pro-Tory nonsense back in 1983.

The only reason I am able to communicate when I'm down there is because I've watched so many episodes of The Sweeney and Minder.

Also known as 'Estuary English', much favoured by politicians when wanting, as my younger daughter would say, to get down with the kids.  Mockney.  In fact, I probably come across a Soft Southern Shandy Drinker about once a week up here, often doing what I'm doing, which is searching junk and charity shops for interesting objects, pictures etc.  But it was a Londoner who gave me my first full-time job, back in the spring of '76, a great guy called John Debenham.  I was lucky he happened to be up for the day and we ran into one another.  I like Londoners.  I like their sometimes brusque way of dealing with things.  Jeff Garet, usually as sweet as a nut, couldn't half be sharp-tongued if some fucking fool was wasting his precious time over the 'phone.

Re: Leather jackets - what is it about them?

Having never heard of 'Snot Rap', I was obliged to 'Google' it and wish I hadn't.  I was confronted with an image of Everett - who remains perilously close to the top of my All-Time Hate List (as Gilbert and George said, you don't stop hating someone just because they're dead) - in some kind of Village People get-up.  Woofboxer, as we know, wears something very much like it when visiting his Latvian seamstress.  Or so he tells us.
Insufficient 'Locarno' in those leather jockey shorts, Woof!

Re: Leather jackets - what is it about them?

My own accent has varied over the years but it has settled into an Estuary English. As I walk or run along the Thames Estuary every day when I'm in England I feel it is legitimate. Interestingly I know a few Leigh on Sea lads, born and bred, and the local accent and mine are almost identical.Im into accents so I notice such things.
And Kenny Everett  used to haunt me because everyone used to say I was his spitting image.
I have a 3/4 length leather coat which I never wear but can't recycle because it fits me so well. I used to look like a dodgy geezer in the coat.

With that leather coat Robbie you could slip seamlessly from Ivy to Goth to Emo to Gestapo.

Fond memories of me and the missus listening to the Style Council indoors on a Saturday night. We have eclectic tastes though because sometimes we listened to live broadcasts from the New York Opera, the matinee performance.

Woof- I once had a full length leather coat that was full on Gestapo. Luckily I managed to offload it onto my brother along with a Levi's jean jacket

The opera was live from the Metropolitan I now remember. When we eat Italian a bit of opera adds to the occasion

Re: Leather jackets - what is it about them?

Comedy records in general are of no appeal to anyone into music. Snot Rap is certainly no exception.

I really miss the 80s. I might just buy a leather jacket, grow a mullet and listen to the Snot Rap 7" on a midi system.

Is the big perm and hairy armpits describing you or the girl ?
