No need to begin another thread on the subject of 501s or jeans in general. Is anyone posting now feeling a little jaded with the whole business? I seem to remember Uncle Ian stating that Levis are not a patch on what they were back in the day - easy to believe. A denim shirt I rather like (though I only own two) but jeans, whether USA-made 501s or Wranglers, are beginning to bore me. I never did get on with Edwin. Maybe - just maybe - I feel too long in the tooth. Maybe - just maybe - I feel that too dull a cult has been allowed to develop around them (like the bloody Harrington jacket). I think Patrick is indifferent. Last month, doing my Ebay shopping, I went out of my way to avoid them.
(On the other hand, ten years or so ago, I liked my L.L.Bean jeans - made in Mexico, I think - very well indeed. They were about £10 and I wore them a lot with a USA-made Ralph Lauren polo shirt and Dexter bucks).
After not wearing jeans for maybe a decade or more then returning to them, I've realised that, for me, they work ok with winter kit but are far better in the warmer months, i.e. with any lightweight footwear and a polo shirt (or maybe a sports shirt). Harrington or similar if necessary.
Although I vaguely recall Lloyd Johnson somewhere talking about a French look of cream sb mac with Levis, pennies and grey Shetland. I'm going to try it when the temperatures improve a little.
I've not worn any in about four years now, I got too fat for the pairs I had and they were starting to wear out anyway. Now I'm starting to reduce in size again (lost 2 stone thus far this year..) I'm thinking it's possibly about time I acquired another pair.
I've had every year of LVC going I think, (certainly 37's, 47's, 54's and 55's), two or three pairs of Edwins 501 copies, some Raleigh Denim Co cone-mills jobs, even a pair of Imogen & Willie I bought on a trip to Tennessee seven or eight years ago.
I like them rigid, selvedged and as dark a blue as I can keep them.
If I do decide to try another pair, Community Clothing are doing some that look half-way reasonable.
But if not jeans, what’s the alternative?
I’ve only got to look out of my window right now to confirm that it’s not chino weather. Soon as it is I’ll make the switch.
Grey flannels? Yep. Sometimes. If I could find a pair.
Blue wool or wool mix flat fronts? I’ve experimented a lot this winter. The conclusion I’ve come to is that the smartest end of Ivy just doesn’t work on or for me. I stuck with cords or moleskin.
Sand/khaki coloured denim maybe? I’ve just brought some from Gant that seem ok (mid rise though). Of course some would say why wear khaki coloured jeans when you can wear khakis.
Blue 501s (or Lee 101, Edwin) turned up. Whether brand new indigo or several seasons battered. Loafers or desert boots. Polo, button down or knitwear. Casual blazer/sports coat. Peacoat if it’s cold. Mac if it’s wet. It’s a difficult look to argue with.
Actually LVC 501s are every bit as good as Levis have ever been. I wear them all the time, but never in the evening - or in the West End. (Unless it's pissing down, like it is today)
^ It’s refreshing to hear reports that something being made currently and not in the USA is good.
There’s no upper age limit for wearing jeans, they just have to be middle of the road fitwise, not too tight, not too baggy and not overly faded (unless its summer). They go with pretty much anything, except a denim shirt or jacket of course. One thing I have stopped doing is rolling them up, I never got into the four inch turnup thing with jeans. All mine are of a length where I just turn the hem up now.
I must admit: jeans and sportscoat/blazer is not for me. No matter how good both elements may be, together it's verging on Clarkson territory. (Non-Brits may have to look him up.)
Agree Yuca, add sportscoat, blazer to the list of things that jeans don’t go with, maybe it’s okay with a more unstructured jacket like a Keydge?
Oh yeah. I was meaning unstructured. Very casual. Cotton, linen or a mix of the two. No lining or padding. I thought that was a given? I confuse myself with the correct name for it. Blazer, I think smart with gold buttons. Jacket could mean anything. Sports coat is a term I’ve never warmed to using. Don’t know why.
I stand by it. As above in olive with new indigo, or navy with washed and (a bit) worn works for me.
