Who'll Recommend A Decent Blazer?

And I do mean a blazer, not a jacket: navy, all wool (not the lining of course) with metal buttons (not too shiny).  I was enthused by one of Alvey's postings yesterday - his experiences in Maine - and have been thinking of acquiring one for a while.  I had one (made by Hector Powe, the only item I've ever chanced upon bearing that name) in 2005, which I wore with a very expensive haircut, button-down, jeans and loafers (hopefully not looking too much like some half-witted TV presenter - but one never knows).  Do I want to look like a little American?  Well, no.  Do I want to look like a medium-sized American?  Yes.
Ralph Lauren?

Brooks Brothers -it doesn’t look like the three button 1818 Madison (sensible) fit is made any more. It was one of their last remaining staples. I wear mine less and less as the years go by. J Press, O’Connell’s - but at at a price. Ebay scouring would seem to be the way to go.

Damn, Woof, you've just reminded me that I once owned a Brooks blazer I couldn't get on with.  I'd forgotten all about it.

Re: Who'll Recommend A Decent Blazer?

The undisputed master of the blazer, chino and repp tie has to be OCBD. Its a very trad look that he does very well so it would be nice to have his thoughts on the subject of blazers. The problem in the U.K. Is that the same look would see you mistaken for a Hooray Henry or old regimental stalwart type, there would be a need to mix the blazer up with some 5 pocket Bedford cords, maybe a madras shirt and some canvas sneakers? Just my thoughts anyway.

Re: Who'll Recommend A Decent Blazer?

Woof touches upon a very relevant point here concerning the look in the UK.  One of my old postings on the subject of blazer buttons stirred up Big Tony's wrath (or, at the very least, sense of disbelief.  I wish we still had his input), partly for the aforementioned reasons.  Having said that, the Hooray and regimental types are pretty thin on the ground unless you venture into the more cow-dung smelling Derbyshire towns.  But, yes, a slight tweaking might be necessary.  Still and all, the mere wearing of an American cordo brogue as opposed to the Anglo version would mark one out.  I might wear a Madras short so long as it had long sleeves and wasn't too obviously vibrant.  Another old poster, Moose, I seem to remember suggested washing a too-vibrant Madras shirt in a little bleach.  I've never summoned up the courage.

Outside of natural shoulders, 3/2 roll, and no darts the most important feature to me is patch and flap pockets. I think they really add a bit of needed casualness. Not a huge fan of the patch chest pocket, because it stands out almost too much for me.

With all that being said, I would go with JPress because they seem to have more of these available than O'Connells, but if you are a standard size Etsy is your friend. Woof is right about the BB sack I would have recommended. It seems to have disappeared a few years ago. However, anyone that followed the link I put in the Japan thread would see that Brooks Brothers classic 3/2 blazer is alive and well in the Japanese market along with a lot of other 3/2 sack goodness.

Re: Who'll Recommend A Decent Blazer?

just my opinion but blazer with jeans is getting into serious Clarkson territory. Or perhaps Clarkson's dad.

With cords, a nice shirt (probably not blue or white) and a good tie (not a repp) then yes. But I can't imagine you in one AFS. What would you wear it with? Longwings or loafers of course and maybe even desert boots. It's the rest of your outfit I can't imagine.

Re: Who'll Recommend A Decent Blazer?

The thing with Clarkson and his type is that they were/are paunchy middle aged men wearing shapeless, shabby, low rise jeans that are puddled and frayed at the hem, straight collared flowery patterned shirts and very basic, brown, or even velvet, two button jackets. Probably Cornish pasty shoes or some sort of black chelsea boot.

Putting the same ingredients together, but better, shouldn’t be a problem for people like us should it?

I’ve seen ivy guys wearing jeans and herringbone blazer/jacket/sports coat, and with well chosen knitwear, shirt, shoes, I think it looks great.

If anyone can do it, AFS can.

I just don't think anyone can.

'It' being jeans and blazer. Which may not even be his plan.

I think blazer and jeans looks good.Key things. Denim is dark and tailored. No puddled or frayed fabric. The Blazer fits correctly. Choice of shoes critical. As denim is a heavy fabric it requires a heavier shoe - brogues or Chuckas. If you go loafers dark brown suede works well.

Clarkson looks bad because fundamentally he is a tall bloke with a huge beer belly and bad hair. His clothes don't fit and are badly put together.

Re: Who'll Recommend A Decent Blazer?

Well, I took a look at Jpress and they seem to have just updated their site. They have removed quite a few offerings. There is still 1 good blazer, but it's doeskin. So, I'd check out O'Connell's and give both of them a ring. But don't forget etsy. A lot of gems there.

Ocbd is the blazer king and I can't recall ever seeing him in blazer and jeans (although I'm pretty sure he has done some good outfits with jeans). I rest my case.

Plain-fronted chinos would probably work best for me.  I think denim would be risky.  I no longer have alterations done as a matter of course.  I visualise a very kicked back look: blazer, Brooks button-down in that favoured shade of blue, chinos and - well, the choice of shoe remains up in the air.

Blazer is handy for golf society dos or cricket at Lords or The Oval.

Probably not the look for people on here though.

I'm not a fan of blazer and chinos either, but it's passable when done well. Particularly with decent footwear.

Blazer & Chino's, a popular look back in the late 80's thanks to Rick Astley. Say no more.
