Norm Thompson

A two-button, grey herringbone tweed jacket on Ebay.  I just couldn't resist.  But I'd be grateful if one of our posters could comment on the quality.  It looks to be union made in the USA, around thirty to thirty five years ago.  Is it at about the same level as, say, Cricketeer?

'Escape From The Ordinary'.

Re: Norm Thompson

Never heard of them. If the shoulder is good then darts may be just about tolerable. Or is it a sack? Two button is fine for all but the hardcore purist.

Not a sack, I'm afraid.

Re: Norm Thompson

Grey herringbone may be the greatest cloth ever for a heavy jacket.

Nice shoulder spoken here.

Re: Norm Thompson

If the shoulder and fit are good then I'd wear it every time temperatures permit.

Re: Norm Thompson

I was a hardcore purist - until postal charges shot up and customs charges began to be slapped on items at random: even knitwear and scarves.  Now it's a question of trawling in the UK and EU.  But these inexpensive, USA-tailored tweed jackets turn up in our 'vintage' shops on a fairly regular basis.  I think JFM would have regarded them as 'workhorse' items, to be thrown on with a button-down and chinos.

Tomorrow, weather permitting, my Stanley Blacker may see its first airing under English skies.

Re: Norm Thompson

Is 'Norm Thompson' of 'Blacker' standard?  This perhaps requires an American poster to comment.  They seemed to knock out plenty of Harris tweed jackets over there at one time, didn't they?  'Norm'.  I couldn't resist.  Like 'Irv'.  Little chap in a back room, played to the hilt by Martin Balsam, dreaming of leaving the dirty old city for the beaches of Florida.  Labels can really sell me on something.
