Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

The L.L.Bean jeans turned up.  They need the orthodox 1 and 5/8 of an inch cuff, which will be done by a nice lady in the next village.  I find Mexican made Bean to be good value and pretty hard-wearing.  They look good with more or less anything up top and loafers, bucks or desert boots below.  Not wingtips and not sneakers - something casual, something 'in-between'.  It's a look I'm returning to after a decade or so - a look for warm weather.  'Pared down'.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Yes. An even better bargain than I first thought.
I’ve tended to stick more to the casual (or pared down?) side of Ivy, so don’t know everything I should about Northampton shoes. Even the Loake Royals rarely get an airing these days.
As far as I can tell, these ones date from just after Prada’s involvement, but before Church dropped their highly thought of 73 last. Of course, The Shooman and Tom would know a lot more about it than me.
Sadly, they’ll probably be creamed and polished more than they get worn, as they seem to command at the very least a quality trouser. Not to be slung on with denim or khakis.

A third 'Hunt Club' Madras long-sleeve shirt.  £5.  The (Ebay) seller had had it on previously but failed to sell it.  And they're nice shirts.  Some connection with J.C. Penney, I believe, so Made In The USA.

Also CDs: Jelly Roll Morton, Margaret Whiting, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto.
Picked up Harold Land's 'The Fox' in Oxfam for £1.99.  The despised 'West Coast' sound - but it swings.  Hard boppers should give it a try.

They are good shirts for the (admittedly secondhand) price.  By sheer coincidence, all three are hanging on the line, together with a recently acquired L.L.Bean USA-made flannel shirt (which probably needs folding and storing till early October).  Who was it who said there was a Penney connection?  They remind me of an old l/s I had from the local Oxfam shop years ago, aside from the fact that felt more like brushed cotton.  I wouldn't object to a fourth.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

A decent haul this morning, firstly from my delightful Hermes girl, then our affable postman.

Pendleton partly-lined two-button jacket.  Unexciting in itself but it replaces the disappointing Stanley Blacker at about a quarter of the price.
John Molloy crew-neck.  Seems more substantial than the LOKL for JS.
Italian-made Paul Stuart button-down
Hong Kong made pink Saks Fifth Avenue - linen.

Ecru Brooks shirt.  £5.  This came from an Ebay seller who seems to get his paws on hundreds of Brooks shirts, most of which are ho-hum and often made in Chinese sweatshops (like Ralphie and others).  But they're always willing to cut a deal and charge no postage.  I suspect they're wholly indifferent to where the shirts are made but sometimes have halfway decent American items.

Alden for Brooks Brothers unlined LHS  in no 8 Shell, bought these a while ago when I got back from London but they finally showed up yesterday.
Everything I'd hoped they would be, it's not often I feel that good in something clothing-wise but these just do it for me, like I could conquer the world in them.

Tim - these are amazing shoes. I rarely wear mine as I love them so much. I wince as I traverse the street in them. "We'll be home soon my babies and I shall put your trees back in and you can rest in your little felt bags for a few months".

TRS - Yes, I'm already coddling them, very much a summer only shoe and I'll do my best to look after them, they'll not be easilly replaced. I'm learning that the hard way with some items of clothing I wish I still had and had looked after better.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

I bought my LHS colour 8s from a US ebay seller who, fortunately for me, didn’t appear to know what they were or their value. They had a few scratches on the soles suggesting they had only been worn once or twice. So I got rubber sole protectors and a metal tip inset at the toe applied before I started using them. Probably sacrilege in the eyes of shoe worshippers, but I can wear them with abandon and without pavement skating. I wish I had done this with all my leather soled shoes.

Me too Tim, I wrecked a lovely pair of Cole Haan loafers some 40+ years ago by walking home from a nightclub in 2-3 inches of snow.

£1000 on the car
£600 on the roof.
Don't think I'll be buying Alden anything any time soon.
They remain a marginal 'Holy Grail' item.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Away from clothes: Blossom Dearie's 'Netherlands Sessions': 'The Lost Recordings'.  (Perhaps that should now be 'The Found Recordings' as they're now available on this CD).  A nice version of 'Both Sides Now', possibly one of the saddest songs ever composed.  Bloss always had an ear for a good tune.
Also, from my chums in Berlin, Susannah McCorkle's 'Most Requested Songs'.  Like my wife, she suffered breast cancer and consequent depression, followed by suicide.
A book: Whitney Balliett's 'The Sound Of Surprise'.
Back to clothes: Magee grey woollen trousers.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Nice version of 'For All We Know' by SM - almost as good (and certainly as sad) as that of Beverly Kenney, dead in her twenties.  Nothing here for the hard boppers of course.

I am still after the moss coloured version as a suit. They don't seem to ever have my size.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

Colour me impressed. My Kamukara shirt just turned up via DHL 20 minutes ago. Ordered on Saturday last (4th June) and shipped from Tokyo - Ireland.
Quality is really truly excellent, it's a touch tight around my middle but that is my fault, having put a good few pounds on in the last few weeks post-surgery. If I had to find one gripe - it's a fairly minor one at that, it's the lack of spare buttons. .
The chambray is beautiful, really soft, came with a warning label about being genuinely indigo dyed and how that may rub off etc and to wash separately, nice little Kaihara Denim logo sewn subtly onto the bottom of the placket.

No extra charges from the taxman or his cronies either. I'll be ordering a couple more in the next week or two.

Re: What's Just Popped Through Your Letterbox?

@RG - yes indeed, the chambray I picked up formed part of it, the re-release of the long sleeve non-pop over. Navy blue and royal stuart are also on my potential hit-list. I’ll be in London at the start of next month (only for a day) so i’ll wait until then and see what JS have to offer first.
