ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

This season there seams to be an abundance of shetland sweaters.

Lots of UK trad stores, including Budd and Cordings, that previously championed cashmere, have now got options.

New and Lingwood have something that looks like Shetland.

Aubin, previously part of Jack Wills, have them. Sadly with an exterior patch label.

The country clothing specialists Campbells have a good selection as does House of Braur.

The Shetland Woollen Company now has a online portal.

On the fashion forward front I recommend looking for the Howlin' brand. Stocked by Trunk and End.

Even good old Amazon are selling a range of saddle shoulder Shetlands.

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

House of Bruar used to offer 3 ply cashmere from Barrie. Very good quality and price. Now they use a different unspecified supplier which is probably cheaper and no mention of 'made in Scotland'.

They have nice looking Icelandic jumpers at a good price.

I like Fairisle, but Shetland still makes me think 'British Home Stores, can't afford lambswool'.

Joseph Turner have a range of colours in Shetlands that don’t look bad + they aare currently giving 35% off.

I just ordered a red ‘Everest 2’ Shetland from Andersons of Lerwick.

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

Anyone had any dealings with 'Humes Outfitters' in Kelso ? they stock William Lockie knitwear, they have some nice looking lambswool cardigans, I've been waiting to see if they have a black friday promo, but just a pair of gloves if you spend over £150, their sale section shows only modest discounts, I'm happy to pay full price for items that I don't think are going to be discounted shortly after buying, and of course like most of us with well stocked wardrobes I'm never in any great rush,

On the (nostalgic) subject of shetlands back in the day the Pringles from the Ivy Shop were excellent, crews, polo necks & I particularly remember a rust coloured cardigan,I had a couple of polo necks that my then girl friend ( now Mrs) and her Mum bought me for Christmas/ birthdays from probably somewhere like ' Mates' in Romford, I wore them occasionally just to keep them happy, but they were never as good as the Pringles, they were probably on a par with the BHS one's Kingy mentioned, haha,

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

Stax- No knowledge of Humes but you got me thinking re 'back in the day' Shetlands. I also had Pringles knitwear  and Alan Paine from the Squire shop. A bit later I bought knitwear from the Village Gate, roll necks in pastel colours and a cardigan from the Bronx shop Iford. My girlfriend sussed out I was into clothes and she knitted me a couple of jumpers a little bit 'fair isle' in '77. They were superb. I still have made in UK/Scotland/England knitwear from M &S and Jaeger. Indestructible if treated with care.Although I lived near Romford I don't recall shopping at Mates. I always asked for money from 'nearest and dearest' as a Christmas box to avoid embarrassment . My Uniqlo jumpers of recent years only seem to last about 18 months.

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

You two were richer than me. Apart from shoes and shirts, anything else in the windows of the Ivy and Squire shops might as well have been window dressing. Knitwear was bought on the High Street.

Great observation on Uniqlo durability. 18 months is about right.
After 18 months they pill or loose their shape

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

I learned recently that Laurence Odie and Shetland Woolen co are one and the same. I'm about 90% sure they're the actual manufacturer of the inafamous J Press Shaggy Dog. Peter Blance & Co and Laurence Smith are also two names cut from the same cloth if I'm not much mistaken, I'm on a roll with bad puns this evening.

In the not too distant future, I'd like to try a Jaimesons' and a Peter Blance/Laurence Smith. I've a few brushed shetlands (mine are all Harley/Bosie) and I'd like a couple of plain ones in muted Autumn/Winter colours.

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

Jamieson's Shetlands are really decent. My go to as the collar is just right. Useful tip of there re LO and others. I'd like so shaggy dogs without the j press premium, so on the look out....

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

I've three or four brushed shetlands from Harley via All Blues Co Colin, they're excellent for the money & currently 15% off for black friday.

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

If you are looking for a Shetland, or sort of knitwear, you could do worse than call into William Crabtree & Son who are in New Quebec St which is a block or two behind Marble Arch. The vicinity is like a smaller version of Chiltern St with a cafe, a couple of bar/eateries and several high end retailers.  A very pleasant shop with good staff who know their products, an extensive range of Shetlands, Fairisles, cable knits etc. Prices are not the cheapest, but certainly not the most expensive in the Marylebone area of London.
Their Shetlands are a lighter knit, making them more wearable in our damp and muggy winters.
They also have a good website https://www.williamcrabtree.co.uk/

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

FSC,

Great call. I was only looking at their website yesterday.

Their stock looks like Jamiesons to me. Some sweaters actually carry the label. I have a suspicion that their previous knitwear was Harley.

They also had some lovely navy flat front cords with side buckles. Very tempted.

JS now have limited stocks of Jamiesons fairIsles in three colour ways.

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

Tim,

You're right about the brand crossover but the construction can differ with each.

I have both tubular construction and fashioned pieces.

Press Shaggy dogs are also finer than their own brushed Shetland Woolen Co sweaters.

Tim

The Fairisles are Jamiesons, the Shetlands are made by William Lockie with the shop’s label sewn in, according to the assistant that served me. I can’t say for the rest.

Good info FSC.

Interesting that the Shetlands are WL.

They're cheaper than Trunk that I had on good authority were also WL

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

Decided in the end to try brushing an old grey Pendleton Shetland I had lying around to satisfy my shaggy dog jumper cravings. Surprisingly easy and worked well. Tempted to do it on a couple of others which feel a little 'flat'

What sort of brush did you use Colin?

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

Good question. Bought it years and years ago, so can't quite remember, but it's got pretty fine hook-like metal brisles, which lightly 'snag' when you brush. Basically, it's not a million miles away from a dried teasel as they use on the brushing machines.....takes a long time, though!

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

In case anyone's hankering for a "brushed" Shetland crew neck, All Blues Co. in the UK are selling the Harley of Scotland version. They're priced at £115 but they have a 15% off sale throughout January (unfortunately, shipping isn't free), https://allbluescostore.com/product-tag/harley-of-scotland/

Some very interesting perspectives on the Shetland colour palette in this article by the inestimable G.Bruce Boyer who came of age at the Ivy League Look’s height in popularity; https://www.drakes.com/blogs/news/bruce-boyer-drakes-brushed-shetland-crewneck-jumper

Re: ANOTHER SHETLAND THREAD...

Great article find Half Mast.
At one time or another I have fallen into all the categories outlined except I don't remember ever having a Shetland in black. I did have a salmon pink one though haha.
