Re: Aquascutum coat on ebay - your opinions

It is not a big price at moment.

My opinion? I like trenchcoats.

I do not like the belt on this, but I also think it would be better with Raglan sleeves.

A few years ago, before UK London Ivy types took up Crombies, fly-front gabardine raincoats used to be all the rage - mostly navy colour. Serviceable and reasonably-priced too. Coats at a reasonable price are difficult to source these days, since the High Street stopped supplying reasonable copies.

Nice to see a factual post/enquiry on here. I think there is plenty of info on the other sites you mention too. However, this forum allows people to say what cannot be said elsewhere.

What about this as an option?

Re: Aquascutum coat on ebay - your opinions

I have an Aquascutum cashmere coat that claims to be a 38R which has the same chest measurements as the one on ebay. I'm a 40R and it swamps me. Measure another coat that you use and see how they compare in the chest.

Aquascutum have some nice shorter raincoats but as you pointed out they are expensive. The coats I have had of theirs in the past have held up well and I would use them again although I only have one at present. Be aware that they outsource some of their manufacturing so check where the label says the garment was made. For me Burberry has been rather spoilt by the chav association and their rather crass marketing.

I don't know if you ever get to London but J Simons who is mentioned here a fair bit has some very nice shorter fly front raincoats. I almost bought one myself on my last visit.

Thank you for the tips. The J. Crew Sutherland at the link above is exactly what I'm looking for. Does not look as well made as the Aquascutum, but has a good price  and it has the optimum length and a modern look. Do you know if I'll find during summer sales or discounted online?

Now I'm hesitating, still have to do some more research ..

Nice trick with the belt, thanks Russel_Street, I thinks I've seen this before with women trench coats, I guess the women are more inventive with the clothes.

Maybe it's now become a female thing?
Never used to be.

Re: Aquascutum coat on ebay - your opinions

A historical question:  did Burberrys always have leather covered buckles?  Ever since I can remember, yes.  But I wonder if during WWI they had them?  Or when they came into being.

Like Burberry, Aqua is now a "fashion" brand with all the associated dumbing down of its product line and modifications to quality. If you find a vintage coat buy it.

Re: Aquascutum coat on ebay - your opinions

Thanks again for your responses. I preferred the Burberry to Acquascutum (I email this ebay seller and got no response) because the former was new and it's the classic version, even though a bit more expensive.
I think it's really risky to buy this stuff on the internet in terms of fitting, especially with these classic or vintage models that tend to be too big or too large. I am waiting for the delivery of the Burberry, I hope I made the right choice.
