The Ivy Ultimate!

For me It's a Troy Shirtmakers Guild OCBD, Flap pocket, Blue/White Candy/University stripe.
Dark, Dark Blue Silk Knit blunt end tie from the old Brooks. A Burgundy one would be my second choice.
Either a Charcoal Grey J. Press 3/2 Sack suit or  Brooks Bros. Olive Poplin one.
Old Penny Weejuns.
A good shave & a haircut.

And a  London Fog mac over the top if needed.

But that's just me.

What's your 'Ultimate' look?

(And please remember when answering this that this is a typical Internet bullshit question!)  wink

Best -

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

Some kind of striped button down shirt, repp tie, blazer, extra-long cuffed cords (no high water pants), and argyl socks with probably heavy brogues.

The blazer would have to button the top button and be extra long in torso length, plus made from some heavy material (not summer wool).

Shoos would be brown wingtips.

Belt leather but not matching the shoos in color.

Long hair, windswept.

No jewellry or watch of any kind.

Blue OCBD
Red or Burgundy knitted tie or a rep tie
Navy 3/2 blazer narrowish lapels
Grey flannel straight leg trousers, about a 7.5'' bottom
Black loafers

My "I Vie for the F.B.I" look

Maybe a rust coloured jacket for my days off!

PK

Oh I forgot Rayban Wayfayers and a shoulder holster!!

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

White OCBD with a pale grey bengal stripe. Standard Brooks supima model in either tradd or slim-fit would do me fine.

Black silk knit tie, 2" to 2 1/2" wide.

Navy sack blazer, either navy seersucker with bone buttons or plain hopsack with brass. Patch/flap pockets below, patch pocket on chest. No pocket square. Either way, early 60s cut with 2 1/2" lapels and a high roll (bandofoutsiders describes it perfectly, it rolls directly over the top buttonhole). Two sleeve buttons, welted seams and oh fuck it a hook vent while I'm there.

Slim uncuffed lightweight mid-grey flannels.

Black belt with engine-turned silver buckle. The buckle I would have inherited from my grandfather.

Green socks. I have a thing for green socks just now. Falke are nice. No argyles.

Black Weejuns, just in a better leather than the contemporary ones.

Old Seiko Bellmatic on a NATO strap.

Hair once more.

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

White broadcloth tab collar with very short points that squeezes the tie knot like a lover's embrace.   Slim (2 -2.5 inch) repp tie.  Charcoal flannel 3/2 sack suit with welted seams, even on the shoulders, 2.5 inch lapels, very short SIDE vents (i have seen it done), trousers with 8 inch bottoms and 1.75 inch cuffs.  Black or Brown Longwings, beat to hell, not polished.

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

I'll be the first one to commit a little heresy. My ultimate look wouldn't include a coat or blazer. I like sack jackets and wear them but my ultimate goes like this: Grey or Navy Cardigan, white oxford shirt with nice collar roll, worsted wool pants or even teflon cotton(something that holds a crease), gunboats or plain toe bluchers, socks the same color as the cardigan, tie optional but if so inclined then a repp tie or wool plaid tie. Hamilton field watch on subdued NATO strap. Pretty boring but I don't think it gets any better than this..

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

Nice choices.

I'll say a nice vintage tweed sack jacket w/ all the proper details, bd oxford in dark plaid, dark knit tie, fawn-colored cord jeans, and desert boots or heavy brogues.

Or...

Hunter green shetland sweater, blue uni stripe bd oxford, slim khaki chinos, and brown penny loafers, navy duffle coat for outside

Or...

white broadcloth bd, chambray sack jacket, black silk knit tie, cordovan belt and penny loafers

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

Odd chocolate brown Shetland tweed Southwick for CCC 3/2 sack with patch pockets, lapped seams, and edge stitching, off the rack and bought on sale but fits perfectly, with some waist suppression
blue Brooks OCBD
Atkinsons Wool Challis dark red printed tie from CCC, 3.25" width
dark grey cavalry twill trousers from BB (fit me better than Press b/c they don't have an insanely large rise)
Alden #8 penny loafers

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

I have a BB three-piece sack - blue glen plaid - I got from "Joe Tradly" that fits as well as anything. With a well-ironed shirt — I prefer point collars with suits, usually, but I can be flexible — and one of Hober's Trad Special ties I can handle anything.

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

would go w/sport jacket-I had a thrifted  glen plaid suit   similar pattern 3/2 sack  Greco or Southwick-the pants died and the effect was much better -jacket +grey flannels(and yes much loved and well worn weejuns)-I think the rig set me back 11 bucks and i got about  3-4 years out of the jacket. (I cant help but think the  pattern would be  great 1925  Ivy if  suit was  jacket  w/+ 4 knickers) outside the  realm of this thread  but one wonders if Press and Brooks did such things then and if there are  any photo ads from that time...

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

Ultimate Ivy is surely a toga and a keg. They're not really me though. I won't name a whole ensemble, but a few favourite combinations:
Tweed jacket and a candy stripe OCBD (herringbone with blue & white probably my favourite, muted colours, patch pockets)
For summer, a cotton jacket and a pinpoint BD
For a more casual look, a plain heavy sweatshirt and white trainers (Keds, Chucks, Purcells...)

It's too hard to name ultimate trousers. I like all the obvious choices equally. As for shoes, I prefer longwings to loafers.

Pale blue Brooks OCBD
Navy cashmere v-neck
Tapered Levis chinos
Navy socks (or none)
Wine Weejuns

Simple.

Re: The Ivy Ultimate!

3/2 sack jacket, with slim lapels and a tipped roll, in light grey herringbone tweed, with three patch pockets, lapped seams, swelled edges and hook vent. Pale blue Brooks OCBD. Slim silk repp tie, which includes dark blue, red and yellow stripes. Tapered flannel slacks, no break. Proper weejuns.

Or, the same jacket/shirt/tie combo, but as a three piece suit including a four-pocket, six-button vest, and with Alden shell cordovan long-wings.

I know one of you lot blagged one of these not so long ago...... I could be envious, I really could.

A pre-Christmas bump.  Come mid-spring my choices would be much the same.  I might ditch the socks, though.
