French Ivy

OK, we've talked about Les Minets (the "French mods" as mentioned in The History of Menswear), we've talked about the Paris Jazz scene, Miles Davis and Juliette Greco, "existentialists", the Nouvelle Vague movies (in particular Jean Seberg and Jean Paul Belmondo in "A Bout De Souffle", Charles Aznavour in "Tirez Sur Le Pianiste", Alain Delon in "Plein Soleil" or "Le Samourai"), the French influence on the British Mod scene from 1960 on, French students and au-pairs in London, clubs like Le Kilt and La Poubelle,  Carnaby street shops such as Vince selling striped sailor shirts, black Breton sweaters and white trousers, more importantly JS still selling Paraboot or Weston shoes along with the American gear, a certain "Russell Street" also  mentioned various shops in Paris with an Ivy League tradition and some friends of his over there who still keep the faith, and there was Alex Roest's essay about the French Look in the London smooth scene ca. 1970/71...

... we've also mentioned Mr Weller occasially, if only for his dreadful rent boy haircut nowadays (rather emoriginator than modfather methinks) or for his chicken legs....

...we've also mentioned modern brands such as APC and Saint James...

... so the French connection is pretty much established over here...

...but I've never heard that term...

... French Ivy...

... maybe I've missed something?

Hmmmmm -

"Le Style Kennedy" was the old term over there. Or even 'Le Style JFK'.

This is all new to me. It's just more '80's stuff, yes?

It just shows the generation who's on the Net talking about all this now. 'Trad' is '80's stuff too.

Re: French Ivy

I guess the term stuck...

Didn't we have a few threads about French New Wave movies and the styles of certain actors/ directors?

BTW, I saw a guy on the bus, a few months ago, who was talking French and he had the perfect French cut. Better than Belmondo. He was a crap dresser, though....

'Hey, Paul, hey, man, you look great...  terrific...  Over here, man...'  Snap snap snap...
What did these people do before Instagram?
I'll tell you what I think.  I think they think - no, they know - they're 'cool'.  Would a character like Weller ever try to deny it?  Or Rowland?  Any of those types?
There's nothing remotely 'cool' about overexposure.
I should know.
