Ivy: Following the seasons

Flicking through my 'Debrett's Guide to New York' for 1988 last evening.  Even then the author was referring to 'the dreaded polo player'.  He also noted the much more marked habit amongst American men for dressing according to the seasons, rather than aping the kind of English tit who wanders around in a cap-sleeved t-shirt in January.  Not sure about French gentlemen - Jim'll know - but the Italians up north also tend to be no fools once the weather changes.  Is it really only the English who are such tossers?
'Esquire' even used to tell you exactly when to send your coats to the cleaners and when to take your walk shorts from the closet.  I must admit, I felt a dick walking into John's last year dressed in a Press lambswool jacket and mac on top, only to find Jeff looking ultra-cool in sweatshirt and shorts.  It was overcast, admittedly, but I was in a lather by the time I'd walked up to Camden Town to meet the family.  Thing is, I'd rather be moist than shivering or drenched.  Do American men still wear hats and scarves in the way they used to, I wonder?  Anyone had experience of the weather in, say, New York or Boston?

Re: Ivy: Following the seasons

In my corner of New England this is the most unsettled time of year. Last week we had summer-like days; today it is rainy, windy and about 52 degrees F (11 C).

I have packed away my heaviest tweeds and flannels but partially-lined tweeds are still at hand. Sport shirts in flannel and Viyella, they will be used well into June, especially for fishing.

As will lined chinos and thick socks.

I am working through the oxford cloth shirt rotation. As they get worn and washed, then they get folded and stored for fall. I'll keep a few out for chillier days but most go in the storage tub.

And so on. There is no one day when I can say "Aha! It's warm now!" and go into summer slouch mode.

Otter : Take it easy, I'm pre-law.
Boon : I thought you were pre-med.
Otter : What's the difference?

Re: Ivy: Following the seasons

A sensible and nicely balanced answer, Patrick, for which many thanks.  Sounds as nasty over there as it is here: my peacoat's coming out if it gets much chillier.  Did you read, by the way, about the English being the worst-dressed nation in the world?  And with the nastiest food.

Let me tell you without demur, British attitudes towards the United States are conditioned by envy: hot showers and Florida orange juice while we're surviving on powdered egg?  The bounders, how dare they? etc.

But I love ya!

Seems more relevant than ever.  I've just picked up another flannel shirt on Ebay: Woolrich, Made In The USA, £16.75 ('Best Offer').  Time to invest.  January and February might be terrible.
