Spy Ivy.......Yale,the OSS, the CIA and Anglophile Ivy Roots.

Yale University played a huge role in filling the ranks of the OSS (the forerunner of the CIA)  during World War Two.  The book, Cloak and Gown: Scholars in the Secret War, 1939-1961, by author Robin Winks, describes how Yalies were drafted by their crew coach, Skip Walz, for service in the OSS and how many of them later slipped effortlessly into the CIA. The movie the Good Shepherd's depiction of the early members of the OSS and the CIA as being white, male, protestant Anglophiles is historically accurate.

"In the early days of the CIA the Americans copied entirely the manners of MI-6 (British intelligence.) They copied their manners, their dress, their shoes, even their Savile Row tweed jackets and pipe smoking — all of that gentlemanly stuff was picked up by the Americans." A 1940s link to some Ivy origins perhaps ?  Spy Ivy!

Intriguing.  I think I'd enjoy this book.

Very intriguing,
I'd read somewhere else about the link between US spies and British made shoes, so this adds a little more weight to that history.

my brother and I knew Master Winks, he was a grand guy, he had read every noteworthy mystery novel ever written and had unerring good taste in detective fiction......

the old ex-intelligence guys wore a lot of J. Press and Barrie Ltd. Booters ......

... emblematic ties from J. Press ...... I had a photo showing this practice but I can't locate it ....

enigmatic emblematics ......

he was one of the good ones and he was a great teacher of future great teachers ..... and he also hosted good wine-tastings ..... and wanted to help the Everglades .....

that's all I'm at liberty to discuss until the year 2032 ......

Wow! very modern for 1941!
I would have dated the photo to 50s or early 60s.

LOL I would imagine Bissell was, not to mention the drugs to make Castro's beard fall out.

His profile does have some similarities to the Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) character in the good Shepherd.

However it is widely accepted that Wilson was loosely based on the real "Mother" yet another yalie and wartime London based

OSS man. James Jesus Angleton, who in London became great friends with the famous British double agent Kim Philby.

Angleton served as CIA Chief of the counterintelligence staff from 1954 to 73.

After the war, Colby graduated from Columbia Law School and then briefly practiced law at "Wild Bill" Donovan's New York firm.Later becoming bored he joined the CIA ,eventually becoming its directer from 1973 to 1976.
He died in mysterious circumstances on April 27, 1996 while on a solo canoeing trip (aged 76), with his body being washed ashore some time later.

I have mentioned him but as he was famous for only wearing Black suits , i didn't want to put a picture up.
He was a yalie and in the  OSS before his CIA career though.
