According to my mucca at Ralfy.com, ice with single malts or any decent whisk(e)y is a bad sign of being an unsophisticated drinker and contaminates and destroys the taste. I don't fully agree, sometimes you need the ice, especially on hot humid evenings. One of my favourite tipples use to be a double Johnnie Walker Gold in a large glass filled to the top with ice. Really invigorated the drink.

The last few batches of JW Gold I had, were decidedly bland and lacked complexity and richness, it may have been a special Indian palate version as I purchased the bottles at Mumbai's duty free.

Russian tea for me this morning.

I'm no expert on booze, but I once drank a bottle of what I was told was an Indian  whisky  called McCleod's with two Indians. A smooth high, superb sound sleep and a head as clear as a bell the following morning.

Re: What are you drinking at the moment ?

^It has to be the purity factor with whisky and some other spirits. I remember my dad had a slightly higher than normal bilirubin count once and the doctor asked him what did he drink and on his reply the doctor told him that the problem with beer is the impurities and he was better off drinking spirits.

I myself thought that whisky was the answer due to the very mild hangovers being experienced, but this time last year I was diagnosed with fatty liver "like someone with hepatitus", "extremely unusual to come across it someone your age" and an "extremely high" bilirubin count. Well at least according to my first doctor, when I went back the following week with the missus prepared for the worse, the first doctor was off and her partner at the practice told me it was absolutely nothing to be worried about and was completely recoverable in a short time, but half laughingly from the back of his hand said it was down to my love of fine whiskies.

In any event, within two months everything was back to normal, so it couldn't have been that bad.

Another interesting point, I went to a dietician and she said it's not the alcohol alone that causes fatty liver, but the energy value and combined with sedentry life style and the wrong food, which in my case was lots of rice and bananas, then you would definitely get it. She said the energy from the alcohol and food goes out to the muscles and if its not being used goes back to the liver.

Indeed, all doctors and the dietician said it is okay to drink in moderation.

So, where does this lead me? Well, I am convinced that whisky in moderation is the best form of alcohol to consume. And as long as you are eating healthy and burning of the calories it is unlikely to do you any harm. Sadly, I'm too frightened to drink it now, I purchased some bottles the beginning of April and other than a couple of shots, I haven't touched it.

As Shooey states, one of the worse things you can eat. Not together, but in your diet. Unless of course, you are training for marathon, otherwise keep well clear, or have tiny portions.

Shooey, I was hoping you wouldn't see that. It will just make you shake your head and roll your eyes about me. Yet again.

He's a academic from Canada who writes really well and down to earth. He pulls together all the obesity research and fitness stuff and debunks myths.

The shorter version.
Only way to lose weight is to eat less.

Sugar and fat are bad.

Possible biggest cause of obesity is soft drinks or soda and pop as those cute north Americans say.

Exercise won't make you lose weight.

You can't tone specific parts of the body by exercise or diet.

Exercise of any kind is good for you.

High Intensity resistance weights etc is the best exercise.

High intensity resistance three times a week is better than gym everyday or endurance.

Portion size is the key.

Only eat stuff that looks like food, veggies, fruit, grain, meat.

There's more and he looks at research both individual clinical stuff and population based.

I think it's excellent.

Shooey, it's not for you.

Oh he has ntersting funny stuff too.

All men in self reporting studies, and that's most studies, over estimate their height, and underestimate their weight. Honstly. Height by about 1.5 - 2 inches and weight by 2 kilos or more. So all men are fatter, shorter and balder than they think.

All people tends to underreport, honestly, what they eat by about 25%.

I think either  you or he must mean 'you can't spot REDUCE rather than "you can't spot tone".' Obviously you can otherwise exercise would have no effect on specific body parts. And it's not 100% true that you can't spot reduce to a limited extent. The body is not stupid. It stores fat in various places to provide  adjacent power sources.

It's also not true that exercise won't make you lose weight. Firstly, the research shows 'cardio' has a significant effect on visceral abdominal fat. Secondly, without exercise cells never empty of glycogen stored within muscle increasing the likelihood of further feeding being converted to fat.

He's probably right on the supremacy of high intensity resistance exercise or he would be if the average Joe or Jane were able to comprehend what it really meant. The fact is they often can't. At one time a lot of desk- bound bound military brass  used to ask me to show them how to weight-train. I used to be amazed at how  afraid they were to attempt any serious weight. Even big guys could not generate much meaningful tension within their muscles. It's partly about  Golgi tendon organs that are under-calibrated.

Another book worth reading on exercise is 'Body by Science' by another Canadian medic, Doug MacGuff.

Dr Ken Cooper with 45 years clinical research experience in exercise says that the ideal exercise for humans is:
* 50 - 90 minutes weight bearing exercise 3 days a week (need a day in between weight lifting)...also burns toxins
* at least 35 minutes of aerobic exercise five times a week

Only eat stuff that looks like food, veggies, fruit, grain, meat.

Some people should never have been researchers because they put nonsense into people's head with faulty research.

I don't want to be too cruel, but seeing as you've chosen to pursue it and 'defend' the case, it's only fair to point out that statements such as "You can't tone specific parts of the body by exercise..."or "Exercise won't make you lose weight." are statements of general untruth. The real problem with using exercise to lose weight is that most people will put the weight back on because in most cases exercise is not sustainable for most people because they either get lazy or are very busy. The best way to sustain weight is to develop a sustainable habit, ie; eating a good healthy plant rich diet.

I wasn't opting out - I just did what I could with limited info, limited time.

I'll give a better rundown when I've read the whole book.

I can even do better and supply references.

I'm not here to defend an ideology or religion.

I'll defend "Exercise won't make you lose weight." as a general but not nuanced statement.

The "You can't tone specific parts of the body by exercise..." was a quicky , I'll recheck

You are probably right by saying "I think either  you or he must mean 'you can't spot REDUCE rather than "you can't spot tone".' - because - again - off the top of my head, clearly you could build up your right arm, or tone it, by only exercising your right arm.

I think first of all we need to stop thinking of losing 'weight' and talk instead of losing fat. Weight constitutes muscle and bone and well as fat and I wouldn't have thought it'd be  a good idea to try and lose  the former.

But let's assume that you do mean fat. While it's certainly true that you do need to do a lot of exercise to oxidize even  a  small amount of fat, it cannot be discounted (along with diet) as a part of the fat loss prescription. Additionally, as I mentioned earlier, glycogen within cells become mobilized through exercise and without that the body has no alternative than to convert food to fat.

If you have not seen a gastroenterologist, you should go see one. Do not trust a general practitioner. You should have a good idea of why you got a fatty liver.
As far as the whiskey, A dram or two once in a while is perfectly fine until you get a diagnosis. But you should get a diagnosis. This whole business of "it was bad but now it's good, don't worry" is not enough. It may be so, but you want to hear it from a specialist.

Those guys are well trained and brainwashed in medical school by BIG pharma, + the medical brainwashing continues with Readers Digest and the BIG pharma reps.

World class health institutes like HHI have noticed over 55 years that people [these days] in their 20's and 30's are getting the diseases that people used to get in their 60's and 70's. And given that there are roughtly 600,000 patented medications these days (more than any time in history), it tells us that medical doctors are on the wrong track to health care. Drugs may be necessary in the short run, but in the long run drugs have been proven to have negative health effects on human beings. The key to good health care is to do no harm, but drugs do harm when used over a period of time. The best doctors now realise that chemicals are not the long term answer to solving health problems and have realised that cutting edge electric treatments such as `low frequency laser',
`H wave treatment' and `Cross brain wave treatment' are working wonders on people because humans are bio-electric in nature (electric treatments work best because people are electric, where-as chemicals/drugs end up causing ill health on bio-electric people). BIG pharma is holding the medical profession back and keeping them behind the times through miseducation in medical schools, but things are slowly beginning to change and one day people will look back on drugging people for the absurd idea that it really is.

What I love about this site is how it tells how it really is. For years I've  obviously been mistaken that a fair amount of chemistry and  chemical reactions are involved in the workings of the human body. What a total bonehead I must have been. Thanks, Shooey!
