That other forum of mine, you know, the one I run from behind the scenes, may be of help, Moose:

thanks.

I have a flash-harry gold-filled one one its way to me at the moment. Thought it might be nice with a blazer. If not I can always do a Bond bad-guy impersonation...

mine's 12K, not sure what the base metal is though. A bit fancy-pants when all's said and done, the sterling versions are undoubtably more elegant.

I never really liked gold but find myself using it more as I age, more or less gracefully - it warms up the skin-tone. Sunglasses frames, brass buttons on blazers, that kind of thing.

What does puzzle me is the mechanics of affixing the belt (still to be bought) to the buckle - maybe I should just drop it off my local cobbler, let him work it out!

The straps snap on, Moose.  Check the BB and Polo websites for them.  Also Ben Silver.

Well you can't beat these for adjust-ability and plainness. You can keep your trousers in the same place which you cant achieve with notched belts. You are stuck with 1-1-1/4 inch wide belts but I rather like a narrow, unobtrusive belt. This is one of those practical items I think the English would adopt if they knew about it more generally than they do.

thanks for all the help - just looking for the right belt now, feeling too stingy for Brooks at USD 88 ex works (I think gator is nearer 800) at the moment. Although I imagine a saddler or a cobbler could run one up easily.

I received the buckle yesterday, and it's a beautiful little thing - happily, the 12K gold is not yellowish or brassy at all and could pass for slightly tarnished silver at first glance

Sorry, don't like these. They've always struck me as fairly tasteless and pretty ostentatious.

I like them.  I think they're elegant and discreet.  I don't know if Sir Winston Churchills Flem spoon. still makes a good one or not.  Brooks had one for a long time.  American-made.

I picked up one from our ol' pal Ralph.  Tiff and Brooks weren't available and the price on sale was right.  It's perfect make I think.

I like the brown croc belt with mine.

A classic Traditional American item.

Why are they 'flashy' in England?

I'd love a Brown Herringbone Tweed one.

Moose and I share a Brown raglan sleeved 'Sherlock Holmes' style Tweed Crombie rather like the above.

good heavens yes. Grandad's (born 1900). Shabby, but I'll have to dig it out. Harding's of Nantwich, if you're taking notes.
