The OLD Tradition...

... And therefore the REAL Tradition...

Like it was, not like some would like it to be.

... I'm thinking of Chris_H in Charcoal Grey Sta-Prest from the Brewer Street Squire Shop in the 60's now.

A Herringbone Tweed Sack jacket & a well fitted Shetland went with The Look too.

And that was how it was.

Re: The OLD Tradition...

Proper Levis & Levis Sta-Prest were there I am told... But never having been there myself all I can do is pass on what I've been told.

What do you remember in the shop? Also roughly when do you remember it? It opened in late '68 I believe (although some sources say it was '69).

Thanks -

Re: The OLD Tradition...

Thanks - The shoe department was downstairs at the Brewer Street Squire wasn't it, with the flagstone floor?

Re: The OLD Tradition...

A long time ago. I do not remember stairs, never mind floors - just loads of people buying and lots of assistants who seemed to be different on every visit. It was very close to a strip club though. That I remember.

Certainly never offered coffee and no long conversations with the staff. Your later experiences sound more like a particular type of hi fi retailing in the 1980s.

Richmond was definitely all on the one level. The department notion does not seem very Squire shop either. It was getting away from the idea of a shoe shop. Only similarity is that shoes in your size were brought to you by the staff.

Re: The OLD Tradition...

Shoes were downstairs, or so most who remember say. 'Department' is my word. It wasn't a shoe shop, but a clothes shop with shoes. But this you know.

The Ivy in Richmond was indeed on one level unless you ever made it out the back.

Nobody offered coffee in the 80's & conversations varied depending on the customer. Actual paying punters were mainly just in & out like anywhere else. Only those who were really into it all spent time chatting.

Re: The OLD Tradition...

Can you really get a coffee in JS?

I smell legs being pulled.
